I don't know if you all have noticed, like I have, that the stupid criminals of Greater Muncie (i.e. Delaware and bordering counties) have been in a bit of a slump recently. The pandemic? I don't know. But now....guess who....NEW CASTLE steps up with a pretty good one. This isn't an all-time classic, but not without interest either: New Castle police allege accomplices of 20-year-old Mylek M. Freeman tied chains to an automatic teller machine outside Star Financial Bank, 403 Parkview Drive, and used a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado to try to pull the ATM from its foundation. The attempted theft was reported to police about 3:30 a.m. on June 26. The theft bid failed, investigators said, but the ATM was "forcefully removed from its mounting point" and was dragged into the bank's parking lot. The device was left in the lot, where police also found loose currency. Damage to the ATM was estimated at $65,000.
So far, not too stupid. they successfully dislodged the ATM to the point where money was exposed. The truck and its occupants fled, but Freeman, driving a 2020 Dodge Charger, was nearby and was taken into custody. According to an affidavit, witnesses — some of whom made cellphone recordings — and surveillance video revealed Freeman has repeatedly driven past the bank, as many as 10 times, while the attempted ATM theft was underway. He also allegedly spoke with the men involved in that effort. Police said when the pickup truck fled, it crashed through a gate and fence at a nearby construction project at a school, and also drove onto a football field
Crashing and driving on a football field during the get away is pretty good, but the real kicker is the story given to police: Freeman maintained he knew nothing about any suspicious activity at the bank. He said he was in Indiana with a girlfriend, visiting her relatives in the Indianapolis area, and somehow ended up in New Castle while attempting to travel from Carmel to Indianapolis. Most of you probably know that Carmel and Indianapolis are separated only by the width of the I-465 roadway, and that one does not need to drive 10 times around a bank, 50 miles away in New Castle, to go from one to the other. Probably the cops knew this also. link

It is New Castle crime but appears that it was committed by a Texas man, suspected to be part of a gang working Central Indiana.
Does this tourist event qualify for our chronicle of local criminal activity? A new category perhaps.

"City police were sent to Lee's Famous Recipe Chicken, 2710 N. Wheeling Ave., about 3:45 p.m. after a man — in a vehicle in the restaurant's drive-through lane — reportedly demanded free chicken and indicated he had a firearm."
Who else is envisioning the guy pointing the gun at the speaker in the drive through ordering kiosk?
