So with what happened last night and what still might happen this year, Mike Neu is not going anywhere for the next 5-10 years, unless HE chooses to go.
In five years he has taken a football program that won 1 MAC game in its first 2 years and has now won a MAC title. As long as he conducts himself as we all suspect he would, and as long as his teams remain competitive, nobody will be asking him to leave for a decade or so.
But now that Neu has had that success, does that change the lens through which Whitford is viewed? To begin with we no longer have to worry about buying out our two highest-paid coaches at the same time. If I remember correctly, Whitford is signed through the 21-22 season, which means there would be one year to buy out if he's fired at the end of this season.
Will tying for a MAC West title (or whatever the equivalent of that might be now that the divisions have disappeared) be good enough? Neu has just proven that it's not out of line to expect more. He's far from a perfect coach, but he has faced just about every adversity that Whitford has faced and more and has led his team to victory.
If, as I suspect, Whitford leads the basketball team to another upper-middle-of-the-pack finish, but really doesn't sniff a MAC title, will Goetz make the decision to terminate?

Whitford has had plenty of time to produce and hasn’t. His overall record is still under 500 and his MAC record is well under 500. Better coaches have been fired for less. But, BSU doesn’t seem real inclined to move on from him. Especially with him being so, and I gotta be careful here, “in tune” with certain issues that Mearns champions. Mearns likes whits off the court stuff enough that on the court results don’t seem to matter that much. Beth may have a different view of the results but if the prez isn’t on board it doesn’t matter. Whit wins just enough for bsu standards and not enough he’ll get other opportunities or command a massive raise. Saves bsu the trouble of hiring and paying a new guy.

I think it depends on how MAC play goes. If they're mediocre or worse, I think he's in trouble because he only has a year left and Billy Taylor was fired with a season left, although that was in a normal economic environment compared to this academic year. Would be a shame if BSU say finishes with 6 seed, loses in MAC quarters and he gets extended. He's obviously never taking BSU to a NCAA tourney or the NIT.
