My guess is P5 becomes D1, whatever it's called. Most other D1 becomes 1A or something.
That well might be D2 in everything except BB.
That only helps a little though. Don't be surprised if it ultimately means D2 becomes more like D3 with fewer scholarships, and lower budgets than now.
Not looking good for anything like current D1 status for mid major schools.

My guess is P5 becomes D1, whatever it's called. Most other D1 becomes 1A or something. No, there is no P5 in any sport except except football. So you won't see a wholesale change like you are predicting. I am thinking schools with revenue to support current level of total scholarships. Mostly P5 schools. Others are mostly losing money overall, much of it FB. But the coming problem I see in the economics of college sports is bigger than just FB. It's a large cut in resources, a likely need for reallocation of student fees. Some mid majors might continue D1 with a sport other than FB, compete at a high level. We have several. But if student fee revenue is moved out of athletics, we could not sustain scholarships on top of other expenses in more than a few. P5 schools are not kindly disposed to say adding a school to their conference in baseball. As independents in sports where schools could support and justify on competitive grounds D1 level, they see costs go up. Mid majors need conferences for scheduling and other reasons to organize their programs. Imagine the MAC trying to keep D1 FB. With lower levels of funding, we've blown the budget. Even assuming they drop a level, it's still hard with any cut in student fee revenue. To survive in D1 in a few sports many conferences might drop down in others. Think MVC or Big East, but in more sports at even lower level.
