I had not thought about the sports betting on the 500. but I was just thinking this morning how everyone enjoyed following the race on radio in days gone by when there was no TV coverage.
The newspaper printed a grid so you could record each cars position every 10 laps and produce a sort of box score at the end of the day. I don't remember a lot of people betting on the race, but a lot more people followed it as it seemed most people had a radio on in the background.
I guess if I am actually going to go to the track and enjoy the spectacle or follow it at home, I'd bet at least one of the favorites so to have a better chance to have a car left at the end to follow.
Not sure how to evaluate a betting strategy to try to actually win the bet, I doubt the handicapping information is a lot better even for veteran 500 fans than the horse track. My first reaction seeing your post was even though I don't have much interest in the horses or dogs or other racing, at least you get the results back faster. It's a long race!

I am glad Castroneves won because otherwise that was one of the dullest 500's in recent memory. The whole race was about pit stops and pit strategy.

Maybe it's just me but there hasn't seemed to be as much passing in the past couple of years. Maybe it's the new aeroscreens.
I don't dislike Helio and I think he's a good driver, but I was hoping he wouldn't get his fourth. I just look at a couple of those wins in years during the split as being a time when competition was really watered down. So now to put his name up there with Foyt, Mears, Big Al ... just not sure how I feel about that. But he can only beat the people he's racing against, so I guess I shouldn't fault him for that. Plus, he does seem to genuinely appreciate the track, the event, the significance of the wins.

Yes, the new aeroscreen has changed the dynamics of the car making it harder to pass. It punches a bigger hole in the air so drivers can draft easier but when they slip out of that stream of air they are slowed down. This means drivers have to be much more cerebral in when they choose to attempt a pass, setting it up over multiple corners/laps.
Also the 500 has been a fuel strategy/pit strategy race for years. Chevy's usually had more power, Honda's had better fuel milage. So the teams have had to work strategy to try and make the right calls. Hell that's how Rossi won in 2016 when the top 10 all had to stop for a splash and he ran it out.
I think there's got to be a middle ground between the racing we saw yesterday and that of the early teens when I remember a race where it felt like there was a lead change every lap. I like that drivers have to work to set up a pass, it shows off more skill, but it needs to be a little easier than it has been.
