There is something the scouts don’t like. For all of them to overlook him with his record says they don’t think his style will work in the majors. He just needs a shot to prove them wrong. It's real simple - velocity. His fastball is only 88-89, and today scouts expect 96+ to even give you a sniff. It's a sad indictment on the current data push in baseball. I do not think it is analytics that's causing this. Scouts and GMs still feel you can teach command, but you cannot teach brute force. I see a lot of kids with heat and no movement, or cannot hide the off-speed stuff that get wild signing bonuses then fizzle because they are a one trick pony that everyone catches up to.

Yeah, but it is a bet that really pays off if they win. Signing a crafty pitcher without the heat is not as likely to pay off big, and more likely to be a career minor league player as a ceiling.
