Drafted in 4th round. Pick value about $426k.
Baker is getting a lot of disrespect. EMU pitcher Meis went in RD10. Still no takers on Baker after 10 rounds.

Also, MLB.com announcers hosting the Draft online really, really suck.

Yep. Remember, he didn't go in early rounds in the past either. I'm not sure if this is his second or third go around. Same old scenario as going high school to college, you can be a good player at the level you're at, but not be projected as making at the next level.

Kids do not make from HS to college based on ability. John Baker is not that case. Look at his resume. Look who he has beat over the last 4 years. He was a 3rd team All-American, for shit sake. He competes at the top level Division I. He is proven. He deserves more of a shot than many of the kids that got drafted today.

There is something the scouts don’t like. For all of them to overlook him with his record says they don’t think his style will work in the majors. He just needs a shot to prove them wrong.

It’s his arm. He’s had issues with it. He’s thrown a ton of pitches. He’s an all time great but there’s enough questions there that are stopping teams from investing in him. Teams look for guys who can throw it through a brick wall these days. He’s more of a Greg Maddox type. Different day and age now. He may have to try signing in with an independent team and go from there.

Hitters can catch up to a 100 mph fastball as they face more 100 mph pitchers. Pitching is about keeping hitters off balance and uncomfortable (varying speeds, placement, ball movement). Keep a hitter uncomfortable and you own them.

Yep, but that’s not what gets you drafted these days unless you are a lefty. Baker will get a shot as a free agent.

It's real simple - velocity. His fastball is only 88-89, and today scouts expect 96+ to even give you a sniff. It's a sad indictment on the current data push in baseball.

Some big arm kid, they give him a chance to learn to pitch.
