"Mearns also said the financial picture that BSU is facing has turned out much better than was feared at this time last year."..................Doesn't he know how dire BSU's financial situation is ? Seems to be sort of at odds with the statements someone around here has been making.

Seems to be sort of at odds with the statements someone around here has been making. Much better than feared is still a University that is not only tightly budgeted this year, but has a future where the mid major institution continues to struggle. The "better" part may be that we can kick the can down the road where it looked like we could face immediate crisis.
The tuition increases and the stimulus money looks like it allows us to avoid major cuts, but don't kid yourself about any bright financial future.
Did you notice the part where he mentioned coaches might just be delighted even if they didn't get much attention to salaries. And the emphasis on the sports which are not as expensive and dependent on producing revenue. The article brags about being in the top 3 and top 5 in all sports compared to the MAC. I fully support desire to preserve some sports where we have excelled, on low budget. Beats the hell out of dropping them, but that may well mean he is looking to hold the line in the expensive sports to do so, not invest much more, if any, in FB/BB.

BSU is a mid-major institution ? I thought it was considered mid-major in basketball only. I learn something new all the time.

I think you have it backwards on one part oomh from what I've heard funding for football has not really changed its still low compared to every where else but we are still making cuts everywhere else except maybe basketball. Most of you know I was pretty close with grunk and had many conversations with him. Budget was never an excuse for him. In fact one thing I remember him saying is we have plenty of money. We may not get S many pairs of shoes as other schools but really how many pairs do you need

Staying the same this year in FB and BB would be great. Maybe even finding something extra for Nue. But I'll be interested to see how we do more than that.
This year, I have no doubt we cut everywhere else, and maybe get away with it as others are cutting there too. My point was that completely cutting sports was the disaster scenario, we may have avoided it, and Mearns statements indicate that may be a priority to avoid. Where else do we cut then to if that becomes necessary?
It's another thing completely if anyone is saying we don't face difficulty with FB funding in the future, it's wishful thinking.
There is always the chance that the cash strapped MAC schools come down to our level. As a long term "solution" that would be the most likely thing allowing us to continue being MAC competitive despite being below average budget. There is no financial scenario I see where FB avoids us needing to do something more than rearranging the deck chairs a little, this may the last year that works at all.

Cutting sports was never on the table or even a nightmare scenario. You are just throwing shit at the walls.
