I asked this same question a year or so ago on the old BSUFans site and got the answer but now can't remember again. I was trying to describe the circumstance to Coach Neu.
Does anyone remember what year it was and who the RB was that saved the day and literally the season in a game up at Northern Illinois about 6 or 7 years ago (guessing).
He was a walk on from South Bend St. Joseph I believe. We were down to zip at that point in the season relative to scholarship RB's and it was a huge game!
I want to say it was Winkler or Winkle or something like that.
The guy played great in that game and prior to only ever saw the field sparingly! I think he was a 4th year guy at the time of that game.
I was talking with Coach Neu about the merits and virtues of guys that walk on and often toil in obscurity for the most part but then get called upon and "really step up"!
So any help on the year and his name would be appreciated and I will write it down this time - lol.

It was Ray Winkler-as a former grad of SB SJ '65 I keep track of any South Bend players involved in BSU sports. We need more players out of the South Bend area-see Bo Calhoun SB Washington.

Thank You so very much for sharing this as I had never seen it before and it says it all as far as I am concerned! This guy absolutely saved the day and I am so glad he decided to become a walk on at Ball State and earned his dream to play major college football and also earn a scholarship. I would love to meet him some day as he will always serve as a tremendous role model for others to attempt to walk in his shoes. Guys like Ray have my total respect and I am humbled by their determination to realize their dream! Wonder where he is today and how things are going for him?
