This doesn’t fall on Coach Lewis but does anyone see a big difference between BSU playing Earlham and IU South Bend versus Kent playing Houston and Gonzaga?!
Hello come in!!

Yeah Lewis was pretty screwed for this year but I imagine future non conf. schedules will be more compelling. I don't think he'll screw himself with bad deals though. We can't sacrifice ourselves playing good teams who refuse to return the favor and come to our place.

Toss out Earlham, but that schedule is another gift from our buddy Whit. Maybe he wanted his successor to get out of the box on a good foot?

I agree cardfan.
Right now our SOS compares to all but 2 MAC teams. We do have a couple of weak teams coming up, but so do others.
Everybody seems to agree dropping a couple of the patsies and adding a couple of mid level opps is good. Just fine to have a couple of weak teams, and probably impossible to avoid.
Not sure we can regularly get the good team money games.
The tournament setting worked well, hope we can continue doing something like that. Maybe one with a top team in it is best of all worlds? That is hard to do, too
Kent is not typical in schedule this year.

We'd have always had one weak team or exhibition. Couldn't come up with better without travel seems the story this year. Home dates were needed and budget constraint meant we didn't want to pay what was needed for that either.

My attitude is let’s beat Duquesne and Vermont, then I’ll want Zags and Houston.

My attitude is let’s beat Duquesne and Vermont, then I’ll want Zags and Houston. They might then want us, too. At home anyway. All of these schools at the top have lots of good choices. It's not really up to us, or what we want. We're always just a money game, too. Competitive they are OK with but still basically they want the Washington Generals, a predictable mid quality opponent, but not a potential L. Kent is probably a little better than they want for a filler game...Houston must have been thinking that.

I don't put this on Lewis entirely. He was just hired in what April? Plus, I'd schedule some patsies too not knowing who I was gonna be able to keep on this roster and the fact he inherited a bunch of kids who have not been challenged. I'd also add the roster is peppered with players that Lewis would not have likely recruited. Bumbalough, Hendricks, and Basheer don't fit what I perceive to be his style. I think he wants longer, athletic kids like Kent, Buffalo, Ohio, etc. have chased and won.

Might not be ready to play this year, but they fit that mold. Mason Jones from Valpo for next year is 6'7 and athletic. He went for 26 and 12 in their opener.

Basheer is OK. Not perfect, needs to improve. But Lewis can make use of him. Not giving up on him.
Whitford wanted more athletic kids, too, bigs who could play in or out. Could not sign them...missed on too many he pursued to make it work out better.
Lewis seems defense first, that's a difference.
I doubt we'll see perfect recruits but I doubt we see many who can't defend. The kids Lewis signed are athletic. But I'd bet he take a great shooter as a role player or a bulky inside player. Either type would add to this year's team.

Although the schedule may not be outstanding, it is okay for THIS YEAR. Lewis was given the roster as is and he had to, and still is, getting rid of laziness and bad habits. That doesn't happen overnight but it is happening. The players are responding and buying into the system. I'll leave at this: would last year's team been in it at the end of either SJS or Duquene? I think they would have lost be 10+.
