Can't lie, I'm a little disconcerted that we can only manage a 7 point win against a team that hasn't won a game on the road and is three and thirteen. Could be a long conference schedule, guys.

This is a good point. Chicago State is a terrible team, #314. No MAC teams are ranked as low as them (although a few are close).
If you look at the result of each pre conf game as either a positive or negative indicator towards being a top MAC team, there are some of each. And the Chicago St game would fall into the negative indicator category. It would suggest we will struggle to beat the worst MAC teams at home.
I look at the pre conf results as a whole as being fairly positive. But not the Chicago St game, as some on this board seem to.

With decent free throw shooting the Chicago St. game isn't close. If we continue to shoot that bad from the line we will struggle in the MAC. I anticipate some improvement in that area.

After Sparks, 7 of our 8 most frequent free throw shooter are above NCAA average (68%) FT shooters. And the next three most frequent after Sparks (Sellers, Jacobs, Coleman) shoot over 80% each, which is outstanding.
If Sparks would simply go back to hitting the percentage he's hit his whole life, our overall % would rise to 74.9%, which would be excellent and, I might guess, lead the MAC.

We have a couple holes that need to be filled by better communication. I think the free throw issue will work itself out. If not, it isn't the end of the world. We just can't have as many missed cues on playcalling and passing. With this year's coaching staff, I think we can work it out.

I've been pretty happy with the pre-conference results, but do I think it really means anything when it comes to how they'll play in the MAC? I do not.
I do think we've seen growth since the beginning of the season. I think we've seen growth individually with players like Jacobs, Pearson, Jihad. Coleman is somewhat under control. We defend. We at least try to block out even though we don't always rebound well. We attack the basket.
I think we will be a hard team to play. I'm hoping the crowds will show up, especially when the students get back, and Worthen will become a difficult place to play.

I for sure agree, but I'd bet if you asked Lewis he'd say we are about 50% where he wants to be on defense and blocking out (blocking out is still a pretty big issue, but a little better) and about 75% where he wants to be on shot selection. Whitford created some really bad habits in these guys. While Lewis inherited some talent, he also inherited a losing culture, terrible fundamentals, very little shooting, and zero bench.

Uh.....I smell BS. Is everything bad here Whitford's fault? And I suppose we're to say everything good here is the result of Lewis' great coaching? Please give me one example of a bad habit that James 'created'. Also, what terrible fundamentals do you speak of? That also isn't James' fault. He had most of these guys for one year, and this team won't go any farther than last year's team did, I'll bet. I also wouldn't say we have zero bench. We have an average bench. And please tell me you just didn't say we have very little shooting because this team has the 33rd best shooting percentage in the NCAA and the 31st best 3 point percentage in the NCAA. www.sports-reference.com/cbb/schools/ball-state/2023.html

Another Whitford apologist... If you can't see the difference of intensity, purpose and execution then you are blind.

Whitford's career overall record of 131–148 (.470) or his MAC record of 69–93 (.426) Those numbers? The zero NCAA or NIT appearances in 9 years? Was it two wins in the MAC tourney in 9 years?

Has one gained access to the internet and started posting?

Numbers ... numbers ... and bad habits ....
Let's see, before the Toledo game ...
BSU was shooting 48% from the field. Whitford's teams for the past 3 years shot 44% or worse.
We have taken 34% of our shots from 3 this year. Whitford's last 3 teams never took less than 41% from 3 and that figure was as high as 48% one year.
What that is called is playing lazy offense and taking poor shots. THAT is a bad habit that Whitford created.
And as for how great our shooting rankings are this year with players Whitford recruited, it should be obvious to anyone that if Whitford was coaching this team, our shooting percentage would be worse (44% or less). That would equate to a drop of somewhere between 100-150 spots in those shooting rankings.
