Most college students who make small incomes are still considered dependents of their parents and thus residents of the state the parents live in and don't have to file tax returns - likely the situation for Steele for yr 2022 depending on when NIL received. For state tax purposes, where you live or work on January 1 is normally the date that determines residency for that calendar year. If Steele hasn't moved to CA until after Jan 1st, he won't have any $$ received in 2023 taxed as a California resident.

Well, Cali taxes NBA players for the days they have a game in the state, so I'm guessing they'll get their pound of flesh.
