Since we're talking about "atmosphere" here, I'll add this. The band needs a revamp, and I say that as pretty much band backer.
I'll just compare to what I've experienced. Because the wife is a Butler grad, I get to a couple of games at Hinkle every year. The Butler band blows BSU away.
It's not really a problem with the band itself; it's the rep (repertoire) and the presentation. It's not hard to find pep band music that rocks, I guess unless you're who's ever in charge of the BSU band. The other thing they do at Butler is they mic the band. Butler's pep band isn't any bigger but they sound 10x bigger. They gotta kind a way to expand that sound at BSU. Worthen is just too cavernous.
Probably nothing can be done this year but something to consider if they're really interested in adding a little energy to the atmosphere.

The music school thinks it is in charge. In addition to what you mention, we should also have a band during breaks, especially for a nationally-televised game the Friday before students come back. There was an SID who used to bring in high school bands over break, but he got his hand slapped because the "music school was in charge of the pep band" (and the HS kids showed them up too). The only way to fix this is if some AD would have the balls to just hire the kids and a director him/herself.

Our pep band used to be killer and would fire up the school song at key moments to keep the crowd at fever pitch, and would play energetic songs. And play often. The way things are done now, not so much. And everything is scripted now and we gotta do the grocery cart game in the middle of a great run by the team and freaking kill the energy in the building.

During one of the timeouts in the second half, the ENTIRE band would literally sprint out of the stands, line up on the floor and play the fight song until the first horn and then run like hell off the floor back into the stands. The crowd loved it and it even fired up the gray hairs. We also used to have the drum line all come out and do something similar and it totally fired up the crowd. I agree that Athletics needs to take over and I’d even suggest we sell a sponsor of the band and share some of the proceeds with the band with the caveat that Athletics calls the shots.

I remember them doing that. That was great. The bottom line is providing energy and spark and they aren’t involved in that anymore.

The only way to fix this is if some AD would have the balls to just hire the kids and a director him/herself. I would say that if the music school is involved, it should be in charge. It should just do a better job. There are probably several factors that go into this, not worth getting into details, but there's politics and people who get butthurt everywhere. Now if an AD wants to hire the band and director that would be great but "hire" means "to pay," and that's certainly not happening now (and would that even be in the department's budget?). Yeah, if you're paying kids to play in the band, then you can demand they show up on Christmas break, but it's tough to tell kids they have to give up all or part of their holiday for a voluntary activity. Even as a voluntary activity you could make kids sign a contract that they have to show up on break, but you might have a hard time putting a band together. Cardfan makes another good point I really hadn't considered, but the media breaks are so scripted, it's like Whitford's substitution patterns with no feel for the game. Code Red Dancers here and here, promo featuring little kid here, promo featuring student here, promo featuring general audience member here, recognition of sponsor here.

My understanding is that the band kids get paid for doing the games, and I believe athletics gives the music school a budget to pay them, but perhaps someone more in the know could confirm the exact arrangements. If the music school cannot be a sound partner like nearly every other music school in the country is with athletics, then athletics needs to work around said music school. It's absolutely ridiculous how the music school has been allowed to strong-arm athletics for so long!

It's absolutely ridiculous how the music school has been allowed to strong-arm athletics for so long! If there is payment from the athletic department involved that would change my view of the situation, but I'd be shocked if that was the case. At BSU, for instance, we know that marching band kids have to pay fees related to their participation in that group. I would assume the basketball band kids have to pay for those tops they wear. If you could afford to pay them to begin with, why would you charge them fees? I would also wonder if this is a case of the music school strong-arming athletics, as you say, or whether it's just not an athletics priority. Goetz was pretty good at getting things done. I would think if this had been a priority to her, especially if she felt like she wasn't getting "what she paid for" I think it would have changed. In addition, this concept of another department "strong-arming" athletics is pretty laughable when you consider that the athletics department's existence is based on its ability to "strong-arm" the entire university community for funding.

I like what Purdue does for their home bb games when the students are on break. They have alumni band members volunteer and they fill in for the regular pep band students and that allows the game to still have a pep band even though the students are not there. I have friends that do this and they tell me it’s a big highlight to be able to do it and they always have more than enough alumni wanting to volunteer.

Does anyone know if other schools are scripted like BSU is throughout the game? It’s ridiculous to see something boring on the video board during a time out when emotion is at peak level down the stretch of the game! And why does BSU not have a pep band for our women’s and men’s volleyball matches like many MAC and MIVA schools do? Currently, they are Ball State’s most successful sport.

Everyone is scripted, but most schools have like 20% leeway to keep the momentum in key moments
