The arena was both overbuilt and underbuilt at the same time, somehow. Should have had elevators on both sides of the building. Should have had more color/warmth/intimacy. Should have kept capacity at 10K (for the perception) Also, when it first opened we had big time concerts there. I worked at several. They were awesome. Why did we quit having concerts there? Too costly? poor configuration for concerts? Not big enough to draw the better selling bands? Lame administration? From what I've heard, concerts have caused damage in the past, to the degree that Sports Facilities doesn't want them. The acoustics are also terrible. And promoters want guaranteed gates, which we can't give. I was surprised they had Alice Cooper in Emens. Alice does smaller venues, Emens was good for him. He came, played golf in morning as he likes to do every stop, schmoozed locals, gave away some comps at the CC, loved the day. On to next show.

Getting people up to the suites/food/hang out areas would require an elevator for ADA accessibility (and space is available for elevators, and not necessarily for ramps). Ceiling baffles (dark, with the dark ceiling, just above the scoreboard) would provide awesome acoustics. No need to do anything else with the ceiling/roof. It would make the arena a lot more intimate and put fans on top of the game. Today, it does feel like a big warehouse. Glad we have it - one of the MAC’s best (arguably the best) - but time for a realistic refresh. Please, please get rid of the awful, eye-sore aluminum bleachers. Why didn’t the U at least electro-statically paint those nasty silver bleachers in ‘91 (cheaply, i might add) red. I was a student when it was constructed. Regarding the size, I think the U (in addition to the momentum Majerus created) wanted our arena bigger than nearby HS arenas (and by the way, those gyms are some of the biggest HS gyms on earth - LOL). Sucks they’re so close.

Does anyone know what the openings around the outside, about 2/3 of the way up, are for? They look like doorways, so I always assumed they were there in case of expansion. I wouldn't say the arena was poorly designed. It's a basketball arena, it wasn't designed for anything else. Good sightlines all around, and the dome roof focuses the noise on the court (which is why it's terrible for concerts). The roof is too high, but again, that may have been anticipating expansion. We were really optimistic about the program back then. Those just help to break up the monolithic scale of the building’s facade.

Some things happened. It was an unusual type of crowd.
