BSU in middle of the MAC
The preseason ratings do not include as a component potential impact of freshmen, or players who did not play anywhere last year.
It does now weight transfers in more heavily.
Not much weight to contribution by coaching.
So depending on those Freshmen and R/S Freshmen we may be a bit better, depending on how our incoming freshmen compare to other MAC classes.
I am a bit surprised we are as high.

Looks like the strict MAC conference by laws on basketball program strength are once again being followed. 1) The MAC basketball championship and automatic bid will be fought out from among the 2 or 3 strongest MAC East teams (this year Akron 102, OU 114, Kent 119) 2) The strongest MAC west teams will be roughly competitive with the worst MAC East teams. 3) The MAC west is required to produce two to three teams that will be among the worst in the entire country. (EMU 314, CMU, 312, WMU 318) The MAC schools have shown great spirit and conscientiousness in complying with these rules since they were instituted 20 years ago. The only violation was when WMU won in 2014. That's really an amazing record of consistency. BSU has proudly done its part by never raising its expectations above its assigned level and awarding lengthy contracts to compliant coaches. link

I have said it many times and will repeat...MAC basketball sucks...The MAC at one time in the not so distance past was a competitive league but now has been reduced to being a one team conference in the NCAA tournament that is lucky to win a first round game.

Not being a huge MAC supporter, I took up this challenge and went back to KenPom '02 to look at the final average rating of the top 3 MAC teams (because we normally have two decent teams and then the turd rollers on an annual basis) to come up with what looks to be evidence that bsu0 has a legitimate point. A trend line is an almost perfect 77-105 regression over 22 yrs. 77 -'02 83 72 66 85 71 71 102 100 111 73 88 111 75 116 109 108 63 109 89 117 105 - '23 We are projected to be at 129 in the most recent '24 KenPom projections (top 3 MAC teams avg)
