I always had a funny feeling about our loss at Michigan*. Now it's explained. Apparently they had our signs. I wonder if the NCAA will have the balls to make this right and vacate that result.

If your sign system sucks so bad that others can pick up on it, then maybe you should move to a system that isn't obvious.

You have to keep it relatively simple. Players have to read and decipher. But you can change it up.
Everybody does this and works to steal signs. That's why you're not hearing other coaches jump on Harbaugh.

I guess I'm just not up on all the NCAA rules, but I had no idea it was against the rules to scout at games. I just assumed that since we've entered our weekday game portion of the schedule, BSU coaches would be dispersing to other locations to see NIU, Kent, Miami games, but I guess not.
Is the purpose of this rule just to prevent sign stealing, or are there other issues?
Anyway I always thought sign-stealing was an accepted, and somewhat respected, part of the game.
I do wonder if anyone worries about stealing BSU's signs since things seem pretty predictable anyway, at least on offense.

The issue is when your "scout" somehow ends up on the sidelines and is taking video and pics. Someone please jump in and correct me if I'm wrong.

The article says something about scouting the signals WITH the plays. AND not just during your games but off campus? I wasn't aware of that rule. With games on TV you obviously have to be allowed to watch those games. Just not go to the game and video plays and signals together?

It is against NCAA rules for staff members of a football program to scout games of future opponents in person. The NCAA football rulebook also prohibits "an opposing player, coach or other team personnel" from recording an opponent's signals through audio or video. The NCAA is investigating claims that Michigan used a large network of individuals to record games of future opponents.

I seem to remember a story that Michigan turned off our headsets when we were on the goal line and about to score the tying points. I was in Europe during that game and never found out if that was true. Did this happen or was the story just sorry grapes?
