As has been touched upon already, it was a strategic mistake to play a worthy game against Akron and play like pussies against central. Reversing that approach would have resulted in 1-1 rather than 0-2. Lewis should consult this board before finalizing plans like that. It’s looking a lot like it’s going to be a struggle to avoid being one of the 4 dregs left out of the Mac tournament.

Game observation: Akron is actually the overwhelming top talent of the MAC? No question. They are by far the most talented and best coached team in the MAC. I thought the season was over Saturday, and while I still don't have much hope because the starters are already running out of gas, I felt genuinely bad for the team tonight. That's the most lopsided officiating job I've seen in a long time. Phantom fouls like crazy on us in the second half, while Akron absolutely raped Jihad and Anderson every time they touched the ball the last 5 minutes with virtually no calls. I'll die on that hill. It was utter bullshit. Look, Akron is a solid team and Groce is a helluva coach, but he's the whiniest bitch I've ever seen in Worthen. He works the refs WAY more than he coaches his team, and his staff works the refs a lot too. He eventually just gets his way, and it sucks. I can't stand him. He also has some very interesting neurotic behaviors/ habits that are kinda interesting to watch. Having said that, Lewis better figure out how to recruit with him and how to work the refs the way he does or he'll never find himself at the top of the league. Now, what I will say is that Jihad, while a beast most of the night, must learn (along with Anderson) when to not force it. And Anderson's ballhandling has to get better. Bailey's lack of clock awareness late in the game was disappointing. One thing I noticed the last 2 games is that both coaches exposed us on inbounds plays, as we had a really hard time getting the ball inbounds and getting into offense both games. I have to keep reminding myself there's a reason these officials are in the MAC. Just so damn inconsistent and they clearly decided they were not going to make any calls in the last three minutes. It was also apparent that unless Freeman punched someone in the mouth he was not getting fouled out. We fouled out Hendricks and Jones. We played far better than I remotely expected and as already noted, against a good team like that you have to go out and finish it in the last three minutes and we couldn't. Why Davion Bailey thought he should just dribble the length of the floor and chuck up a turnaround fadeway with a guy in his grill is beyond me. He should have dumped it to Anderson and trailed behind him for decent shot. Now it's back on the road where we have been awful. Winning on the road and creating your own attitude & energy takes a different mentality. We can't seem to pack up the kind of effort we gave last night at all. Toledo is also 3-0 so probably another L. We may be 0-5 when the Cards come home to face Miami on the 20th.

I sort of hoped the Whitfield era would be largely forgotten by this point. Instead we’re pining for his players and being carried by another one of them….albeit not carried very far

No question this year's recruiting class has been a major disappointment. There is potential there with frosh Jones, Doughty, Brown & Middleton. However, the roster was screaming for some additional transfers with D-1 experience, especially another big man. Baily and Anderson were nice additions. Lewis has not had the patience to let a couple of these guys see consistent 12-15 minutes per game to develop.
For the 2024-25 class, we have signed two more high potential high school kids. Sure hoping any other slots that open up from players leaving are only filled with D-1 transfers. Otherwise, it could be another challenging season.

For next year it's for right now, 1 high school kid (Jai Anthoni Bearden) and 1 JUCO transfer (Jermahri Hill).

This class did include one transfer we needed and have not seen active on the roster due to injury.
We got two good transfers in Baily and Anderson. Those 3 are not bad additions. Most of us wanted a big man transfer.
In terms of proven players we might today wish for two things we shouldn't overlook.
One, Lewis expected to have Coleman. That we got Middleton at the last minute may end up being some compensation, but not in terms of experience or size or what we need right now.
Second, Lewis it appears had to make a choice on getting a big man transfer when there was the chance to get in late on Doughty and he chose to sign him rather than a grad transfer or other player who would be better early on and in the future. Perhaps he saw Hendricks was improved that influenced that choice. In any case, that was a judgment call on how soon Doughty might contribute. That he arrived with an injury that slowed him and now is out for the season is very costly, but Lewis's choice was understandable and may yet turn out the right one. But not for this year...
I don't know what he expected from the Euro transfer, but that one sure likes a filler or Plan C choice.
This next year so far he has a promising freshman and some athleticism in a transfer.
Right now I'd expect we lose one to three or four of our current players to make room for perhaps 3 other players. My preference, transfer talent up front, a lights out shooter, and best player available. If there is some difference making freshman recruit we can add, I'd support that if he's confident in improvement of the freshmen.

Akron started 4 seniors last night and had two more and a junior coming off the bench. Their bench scored 22 and all eight players in their rotation played at least 20 minutes. They play 5 guards and 3 frontliners out of that group. They committed only 6 TO's. The fact that Groce has been able to create loyalty and belief and have 6 seniors on the roster is a testament to the fact they believe they can own this league which they have. They're not a super team but they are tough, poised, consistent, take care of the ball and they have quality depth.
Lewis made a huge mistake trusting Coleman. He should have jettisoned his ass on Mar 15th and gone after another guard maybe two. I would have skipped Joey Brown and definitely Zaggy, kept Jones & Doughty and found two transfer forwards. We are going to grind down our starting five, get injured again and I would predict we will lose our leading scorer to the portal at year-end. And, if we can't figure out how to develop Bell & Adams after two years here why are they still here? Both need to transfer and probably the Croatian kid too. We can't afford any more "projects" or try to teach a kid our playbook after two years.
Speaking of two years, that's the window. 24-25 and 25-26. If we can't recruit and coach up a championship after four years it's time to go shopping again.
