Penn State is coming off back to back wins over the #1 ranked Ohio State and will be in Worthen Arena tonight to play the fast improving Cardinals of Ball State. The “Beast of the East” enter the match 6-2 with losses to unbeaten Stanford and defending national champion UCLA. Game time is 7:00 and a huge crowd is expected as the match has been designated “Youth Night.” All high school and under students will be admitted for $3 and their parents $5. The Cardinals will play again tonight without their star middle attacker Vanis Buckholz who is currently injured. Ball State is 8-1 at home this season and 26-3 in Worthen since Donan Cruz became head coach of BSU. All signs point to another great match. The Nittany Lions advanced to the Final 4 last year.

Penn State is certainly a top level team and the Cards might have been a little fatigued. Regardless, it doesn’t look like this is our year to contend.

Despite the loss and playing without our star middle attacker Vanis Buckholz, BSU gave Penn State a good match for 2 sets. And yes, coming off a great hard fought win over Loyola on Friday took its toll fatigue wise on BSU in set 3. Starting 3 freshman makes it difficult to beat a great team like Penn State and BSU could have been up 2-0. Hats off to the tremendous crowd that came out and raised the roof in Worthen. BSU won the match it needed upsetting a veteran Loyola club to go 1-0 in conference play. The Cardinals will be tough to beat at home in conference play. Winning on the road will be a big challenge. The good news for BSU is Buckholz is expected back soon!

Has Buckholz been nursing an injury for a while? I ask because he's barely played more than Mr. T, who missed something like 9 matches. I thought maybe some of the youngsters had beaten him out for playing time.
