Nice little Facebook post today from an Indiana (history, not the University) basketball fan. It may be hard to see the caption, but it shows a picture of Mackey today (March 10, 2024) and the post states: “73rd consecutive sold out crowd at Mackey Arena for Purdue men’s senior day. It was such an electric atmosphere. Whether if you’re at IU’s Assembly Hall, Hinkle Fieldhouse at Butler, Mackey Arena at Purdue, ISU’s Hulman Center, or attending a high school basketball game; basketball in the state of Indiana is special.“ Other D1 schools include FW Purdue, IUPUI, and Evansville. And, Ball State. Honestly though, in the heart of Hoosier basketball history, embedded within the largest HS basketball gyms in the world, is Worthen Arena. I was a student in the late 80s at BSU - what happened?

We'll see how well Indiana State fares once a top program poaches their coach. Once he moves on for a 2-3X pay raise, ISU should sink back into mediocre. They're unlikely to have the staying power that Butler has.

And, Ball State. Honestly though, in the heart of Hoosier basketball history, embedded within the largest HS basketball gyms in the world, is Worthen Arena. What the h*ll did BSU do to kill the once historic program? It wasn't exactly historic on a national scale...
Indiana has had some awfully good college basketball, and we're in that history, probably as a relatively minor player in comparison to the big 2 but with significant success in our glory years.
You mention the state D1 programs many of us have seen make up that state history, you leave out Valpo which has had some good years.
That Ball State notable part of the history is within the memory of many of us on the forum. Some of us were around and knew BS in the 60's through the early '80's, too. The story was less than glorious for most of the years BSTC existed before BSU was a U and before MAC membership, but we who were here remember almost 20 very good years through 2006.
We can't compare to IU or Purdue in any meaningful way, but no other state program can. ISU had a year or two of glory. Evansville was a power in their lower division before D1. Butler had some great history for years with Tony Hinkle, and then again more recently, with membership in the Big East.
We made a splash with Majerus/Hunsaker and sustained quality with Ray McCallum. If you look through this forum's posts you will see the recent disappointing history since 2006 discussed at length. Painful for most of us.
Worthen was (over) built to be part of a hoped for ambitious rise to prominence but we lost that thread, failed to capitalize on a great chance. Most of us are critical of administration failings, including firing a very good coach, and penny pinching on coaching, with then a spectacularly bad hire...
Others may debate it, but IMO the time for us to have a chance for any real national prominence is past, especially with our marriage to the MAC FB commitments.

I’m not a Purdue fan but I have watched several of their home games on television over the last few years and the atmosphere they have going for them in Mackey Arena is up there with the best of them

They're unlikely to have the staying power that Butler has. In 98% of all cases this is probably spot on. But I don't know about Schertz. He was successful at the DII level for a long time, spent 13 years there. A successful coach spends that long at a lower level either A) because nobody thinks they can do the job at a higher level, or B) because they're just happy there. Did ISU just give him the chance nobody else would? If that's the case and he's proven he can be successful at this level, yes he'll likely get a better offer and be gone rather soon. But if ISU had to tug him away from a place where he was very content, he might be happy to stay where he is. Might be one of those rare people for whom money isn't the most important thing in the world.

I’m not a Purdue fan but I have watched several of their home games on television over the last few years and the atmosphere they have going for them in Mackey Arena is up there with the best of them I thought Matt Painter’s comments on the B10 network (I think quotes from his most recent post game interview) was interesting and revealing. He made the comment that PU has the biggest winning percentage in the B10 over the past 10 YEARS! I knew they have had a lot of good teams and success but that is rare air for sure. The other comment he made I found interesting was that he acknowledged that “Purdue bb doesn’t really resonate on a national level or even Midwest basis with bb fans and media”. I think that’s very true. Don’t get me wrong PU has their fans and fan base but you just don’t see or think of them as a national power or they’re not one of the first teams to be rattled off when there’s discussion about the top programs in men’s bb. Not sure why that is maybe bc they seem to always crap the bed come tournament time. Maybe this year that changes for them. I like Painter and hate Purdue though.

"Not sure why that is maybe bc they seem to always crap the bed come tournament time." Yes. I know a lot of people who do not watch a college basketball game until March Madness starts. And all those people see is a hyped up Purdue team get gut-punched year-in and year-out.

I don't know, but I think being a 1 seed and losing to a 16 seed resonated quite a bit on the national level.
But seriously, them not having national resonance comes from not making the final four since 1980. 44 years. In college basketball, national resonance comes from the tourney. Period.

I bet nobody outside of the MAC views them as a real contender because they've not made the big dance in any of those years.
