If Lewis wants to save his career he'll need to cut bait on some guys. (hate it for them, but, that's what the portal has created) As we've kicked around before, I think we can look at minutes or lack thereof and see who the candidates for "how bout we find you someplace where you can play" discussions. Bell, Adams, Brown, probably Jags. That's 3 or 4 I can see popping open. We were playing 6 guys, so anyone beyond 6..... And you know one of the starters will leave, if not 2 of them. Just, because they can.
We'll see, but I'm betting that by end of April the roster will look quite different.

Coaches may know something we don't about the 4 most likely "cuts." so we might see a surprise about somebody being retained.
Assuming we have the 6 newcomers you are thinking about, the best case is very unlikely to be that we get 6 starter quality players. If we lose two of our top 6, we may be doing well to to get 3 back who we are really happy with as replacements. And those may not be equal talents to what we lose. I doubt we replace Jihad with an equal performer, to start with.
It may be that the two kids we have signed turn out to be important, too, similar to Jones.
We do have a good shot at getting some depth, and better balancing talent where we found we needed it. And on the bright side, we can hope to have more returning production than we did last year. Plus, there should be some returning who improve, I hope as much as did Jihad, and Ben...
The portal doesn't look to me like Christmas in May when the dust settles. I think the rest of the MAC will see something very similar. Teams will lose their best players, scramble to find replacement. Whose returning players step up will be the difference, not some influx of talent to the MAC.

I expect to see us go not only into the Portal but to pick up a player or two via JC route.
I’m not sure if JC graduates go into the Portal??

Seems to me like ncaa academic standards have been relaxed and/or circumvented to the point of near non-existence. Who ends up in JUCO these days and why?

So then there is zero excuse for us not to contend in the MAC next year....right? Can we get that in writing?

So then there is zero excuse for us not to contend in the MAC next year....right? Can we get that in writing? I do think we were hurt more by the portal than any program, and that's unlikely to happen again. But. There are so many variables and so much uncertainty, I doubt any program can be sure of what happens. We could lose enough players to be similar to last year with one or two returning rotation players...
It will make off season interesting, not just the recruiting which we can argue about, I am sure. When summer comes and we have players on campus, as school gets started, Lewis will have again as many 7 or 8 newcomers to work with.
I would say it is likely we have more overall talent compared to starting last year, where we had 2 red shirt freshmen, neither able to contribute, 5 freshmen, a JUCO, 2 D1 transfers, and then quickly found we had two newcomers who were on the shelf with injury.
A good case would have him knowing he can count on proven MAC production with 4 or 5 players, instead of the 3(?) he could count on this year. Nice to not have to find so many rotation players to cobble together. Good to have 13 physically able to play, with I hope 6 or 8 with D1 college experience.

I don't think the D1 portal will be a magic source of great proven D1 players and we need to find players who have talent that hasn't been proven and can be developed.
Those good HS recruits who end up over recruited and disgruntled and will be interested will get more NIL bidding on their services.
The downside is JUCO players take some time to adjust to D1, fit in. Cleary did not. Bailey didn't at first.

Let's see what the core is after that last day of the portal...and who we've added.

No real clues in that Daily News story as to what departures will be. Article was only a review of a weak season finish that we all would like to forget.

How about an all AI basketball team? They would never miss a 3 pointer their rebounding would be brutal with very sharp elbows and their legs would never tire. Best yet BSU would be in the Big Dance every year. They would do what the coach says or be benched or rather shut off. Coach speak would have to be taught like " Get the fuck off your ass" Initial costs would be very high about what it is now but moving forward a contract with ACE Hardware would keep the health of the team in check if one of them got a screw loose. Come to think of it we have had players who have had screws loose but no real way to fix them. (I know you all could name some)
