Who's to say a head coach at our level making maybe $275K/yr decides he can live off $175K/yr and and decides it's a wise forward-looking investment to put the other $100K through the collective for the collective to pay his players, either anonymously or known. These collectives aren't transparent to that type of reporting. If BSU didn't get a penny besides that one $100K contribution, we could pick up at least 2-3 decent players. First, I don't know how things work in his household, but I'd say his wife might have a say in that one. Second, I also don't know how payroll handles coach pay or how the collectives pay the players, but making $275k does not necessarily mean he has a $100k lump sum handy he can apply to that payment. I would hope that making that kind of money he's not living paycheck to paycheck, but at least part of every paycheck is already going to be spoken for.

I was speaking in general more so than to Lewis specifically as I have no idea how he spends his money nor even what he actually makes. Just saying that any MAC/Horizon/Summit/OVC etc coach might look at Schertz' situation where the MVC was wide open 3 years ago after Loyola & Wichita State left for greener pastures. Schertz assembles a solid roster and parlays that into a $12M deal 3 yrs later at St.Louis (without even making an NCAA tournament while at ISU!) And DeVries from Drake also MVC gets a huge Power 5 deal also & without any NCAA tourney wins. Well guess what, the MAC is similarly wide open now with most schools losing much of their '23-24 contributing roster, like most of those other conferences at our level. I could certainly see how a coach might envision that with a stronger roster of players than his conference opponents, he could similarly win enough that he could be on the doorstep in 3 years for a giant leap in earnings. Nothing forcing such coach to do so, but should he choose to collect his university salary in full but not spend it all - thereby leaving a nice chunk to either put it in Savings, invest in the stock market, or donate to the school's collective for basketball in order to obtain that better roster of players than his conference opponents.....he could well decide the best potential payoff down the road is to enhance his own reputation and buy some players.
Forget about taxes or how Payroll handles coach pay, it's just that decision of what to do with discretionary income - take the Jamaican cruise, invest in Tesla & QQQ, take out the 4% CD, or try to buy a point guard and two bigs? yeah maybe the wife hesitates, but I'm sure the big donors who donate millions at IU/UK/Arkansas/Oregon have wives too.
I mean any coach would rather the pay-to-play $$ came from somewhere else like 1 big donor, multiple smaller alumni donors, or student fees - but in the absence of those, the coaching staff has the most vested interest in the team's success.

Big donors live in different blue blood world. BB coach at our level more like blue collar.

Coach/school can’t “legally” do any of those things even if they wanted to.

Use the shoe contract money for nli Apart from the issue of University money not being able to be used for NIL... I still say there could be away around this. Instead of the university giving the contract money to the player, why couldn’t the shoe company give some of that money to the players? What is our contract dollars with the shoe company, I don’t even know what brand we wear?

Officially announcing that I, WilliamTSherman, am entering the forum portal for the purpose of transferring to the Connecticut Men's Basketball forum "The Boneyard". The BoneyardI would like to thank Ball State men's basketball for nothing over the last 25 years, and I wish it the best, meaning that I hope the earth opens up and swallows it.
