I have a theory although it’s only that. I wonder if more desirable recruits negotiate with suitors for a deal and then once they secure a few offers then they enter the portal to see if there’s any further interest or a better offer. Maybe this is the way it’s already done with the high major prospects but curious if this is the norm for all conference MAC players like Jihad who are more likely to go to a higher mid major instead of a P5.
For reference, I wonder if RayJay Dennis already had done the deal with Baylor last year before jumping in the portal or did they reach out after he submitted himself. He is a stud and had to have lots of offers and significant $$.

Guarantee deals are made or at least offers are made before certain kids hit the portal. Especially when you see how quickly they commit to a new school after they hit the portal.

Does a player have to be in good academic standing to enter the portal? I didn’t know classes were still required. Now I’m confused 😂

Are these that are listed definite departures, particularly Bell and Middleton ? They opted into the portal they could come back if Lewis wants to allow them

Brady's stance used to be if you declare you're not coming back here. Problem know is you can't really afford to hold someone's schollie and wait for them to decide whether they're coming or going. If you jump in, there may not be a spot left for you to jump back if the grass didn't end up being greener.

Yeah I don’t see how coaches can afford to sit idly by while players “test the waters.” That player is pretty much saying “if I can get out I’m gone.” Which means you're not really in. Ok, cool. Good luck and hope you land on your feet. We want players who are committed to the program and aren’t looking to get out. Now, if a kid enters the portal and then the next morning comes in and says it was a mistake to do it, didn't feel right and he/she is committed to being a Cardinal, then maybe you listen. Whit was willing to take guys back weeks later. That’s a losing proposition.

The old-school tough guy "committed to being a Cardinal" image is very appealing, but I don't see that the level of talent accumulated by Lewis is such that he can take a hard line on a player like, say, Middleton. Also these days " committed to being a Cardinal" means "not even qualifying for the MAC tourney", so I'm not sure that is a very viable stance to take with the players. When you're a shitty program and have been for many years, it may not be realistic to take the haughty attitude being suggested. I'm not saying you hold scholarships open, but if a useful player wants to come back after testing the waters, and you have the spot still open, we are not in a position to turn up our nose at them. You may end up with a team built around the star power of Ben Hendricks.
