The Pac12 today raids the MW for 4 teams, needs 2 more by 77-78 to be an FBS conference.
Failing efforts to lure ACC teams and seeing the B12 be aggressive, they're fighting to stay alive with high second tier teams.
G5 probably becomes G6 more likely than they become P5 again. With good luck they would be the new king of the hill in G5(G6). Not much left in FB on the West Coast, maybe a couple for BB. So. Have to sign at least a couple of strong Southern teams, preferably in Texas and/or in other bigger market.

Not sure why the Air Force Academy (prestige), UNLV (location), and Wyoming were not approached. San Jose State is weak athletically, but could grow in a PAC-12 setting. Seems like they would want a Bay Area representation.
I say Wyoming because it represents a whole western state. (Idaho and Montana used to be full members of the Pacific Coast Conference, the precedent to the PAC-8-10-12).
Make the leftovers of the MWC merge into AAC or Conference USA

It's got to be highly depressing for the remaining Pac12 schools. All their options are dismal compared to what they had before. The conference shake up was a total disaster for them in every way. Their hardcore fanbase people probably feel like sitting in a running car with the garage door closed at this point. Also I don't know, but I would guess that conference revenue sharing with the likes of USC, Oregon etc probably made their football programs $ net positive. Now they're going to have to fleece their students for fees to stay afloat like the rest of the schlub programs.

Damn. Texas State (Sun Belt) gave Arizona State a scare last night. Maybe the PAC-12 tries to lure Texas State, UTSA, or North Texas to get a foothold in another large populated state.

Maybe not quite as weak as the MAC's contract, but nowhere near the SEC contract. The draw for the PAC12 is in name only, although, it is better than the MWC, Sun Belt and Conference USA situations.

TV market and recruiting footprint.
Of UNLV, Air Force and UTSA, only a team in Texas adds recruiting presence, and none are as significant for TV. Assuming that the new Pac8/12 has any hope of being a P5 conference again, revenue is at best going to be marginal for such aspirations without a big TV contract. They lost what they once had in that regard.
Adding Gonzaga for BB might make them a very strong G5/6 conference and generate some TV revenue.

TV Market??? Better markets available than New Orleans & Memphis. Some western states have no pro sports, so college is their thing. Many have multiple small TV markets that add up to larger markets. Here's the DMA Top 75 TV Markets: 1 New York 2 Los Angeles 3 Chicago 4 Philadelphia 5 Dallas-Fort Worth (North Texas)6 Atlanta 7 Houston 8 Washington-Hagerstown 9 Boston-Manchester 10 San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose (San Jose State)11 Phoenix-Prescott 12 Seattle-Tacoma 13 Tampa-St Petersburg-Sarasota 14 Detroit 15 Minneapolis-Saint Paul 16 Denver (Air Force Academy & Colorado State)17 Orlando-Daytona Beach-Melbourne 18 Miami-Fort Lauderdale 19 Cleveland-Akron-Canton 20 Sacramento-Stockton-Modesto 21 Charlotte 22 Portland, OR (Oregon State)23 Raleigh-Durham-Fayetteville 24 Saint Louis 25 Indianapolis 26 Pittsburgh 27 Nashville 28 Baltimore 29 Salt Lake City (Utah State)30 San Diego (San Diego State)31 San Antonio (UTSA)32 Columbus, OH 33 Kansas City 34 Hartford-New Haven 35 Austin 36 Cincinnati 37 Greenville-Spartanburg-Asheville-Anderson 38 Milwaukee 39 West Palm Beach-Fort Pierce 40 Las Vegas (UNLV)41 Jacksonville 42 Grand Rapids-Kalamazoo-Battle Creek 43 Harrisburg-Lancaster-Lebanon-York 44 Norfolk-Portsmouth-Newport News 45 Birmingham-Anniston-Tuscaloosa 46 Oklahoma City 47 Greensboro-High Point-Winston Salem 48 Louisville 49 Albuquerque-Santa Fe (New Mexico)50 New Orleans (Tulane)51 Providence-New Bedford 52 Memphis (Memphis)53 Fresno-Visalia (Fresno State)54 Buffalo 55 Fort Myers-Naples 56 Richmond-Petersburg 57 Wilkes Barre-Scranton 58 Mobile-Pensacola-Fort Walton Beach 59 Albany-Schenectady-Troy 60 Little Rock-Pine Bluff 61 Knoxville 62 Tulsa 63 Lexington 64 Dayton 65 Tucson-Sierra Vista 66 Honolulu (Hawaii)67 Spokane (Washington State)68 Des Moines-Ames 69 Green Bay-Appleton 70 Wichita-Hutchinson Plus 71 Roanoke-Lynchburg 72 Madison 73 Omaha 74 Flint-Saginaw-Bay City 75 Springfield, MO ----------------------------------------------- 98 Boise (Boise State) 155 Idaho Falls-Pocatello-Jackson (Idaho, Wyoming) 162 Missoula (Montana, Montana State) 166 Billings (Montana, Montana State) 180 Bend (Oregon State) 186 Butte-Bozeman (Montana, Montana State) 189 Twin Falls (Idaho) 196 Cheyenne-Scottsbluff (Wyoming) 198 Casper-Riverton (Wyoming)

If the Pac12 rebuilds with G5 schools, are they still a P5 conference? What is the definition or qualification to be a P5 conference?

repackaging the Pac12 with MWC will not generate more TV revenue so it seems like a waste of time. Oregon State and Washington State will not move the needle on increased revenue or interest.

They'll get to 8, wait for the ACC to implode, and pick Stanford/Cal back up to get to 10, that's my guess.

Sounds like the Air Force Academy may favor a move to the AAC to be with West Point and the Naval Academy.
