I take it when Lewis made the comment about not being concerned about our offensive game ... he wasn't talking about what we saw tonight.
We do appear deeper, but I'm not sure we've got anyone as good as Jihad or Anderson offensively. OTOH, we only had 6 turnovers total tonight and each of them probably would have had at least that many.
I'm certainly hopeful Gorosito, Hart, Brittain-Watts, Hernandez and Hill will shoot better than they did tonight, but no reason to believe so at this point.
If Sparks can't return to being a 70% FT shooter, I just don't know if he'll ever be much of a factor offensively. I mean he can screen and rebound, but you can't feed him the ball deep and expect to be rewarded because team's will just hack him to death without fear of being hurt at the FT line.
MAC taking it on the chin tonight from the Sun Belt. Of course, Sun Belt hosting all so I guess that needs to be considered.

32% Field 24% 3 point line and 58% ft.
We shoot even a reasonable percentage and we win by 10+

More thoughts now that I’m back home.
Sparks had no explosiveness at all. He can get boards because he’s tall and wide, but couldn’t get a shot up against their interior defense. Wasn’t impressive at all, and I still think he plays like he looks - soft.
Hill was impressive once he stopped shooting beyond 4 feet. That will be his game, slashing to the rim.
Pearson….i sat by his family. Nice people. But he isn’t a three point shooter. His misses down the stretch killed us.
Point guard play was decent from both Watts and Juanse. Hernandez had moments. Mason gave solid minutes but I’m not sure he took more than 1 shot. Hart I don’t think shot at all, and was stripped once or twice. He just looks like he needs playing time to get in the flow. I’m worried about him.
Thought we might see the Croatian down the stretch, Lewis told him to get ready but never put him in.
Hendricks was more of an offensive threat than sparks. Wild to be saying that.
I think it’s gonna be another mediocre year, and mediocre for us is BAD for most teams.

It is early and Lewis is looking for the correct combinations. I have faith and I can be patient. We are much more athletic. Barring injuries, depth should not be an issue. We can only get better. There were a lot of things that weren’t encouraging. Jones still does not want to shoot. A couple of guys didn’t know when to stop shooting. Hopefully Sparks was under the weather. I am honestly not his biggest fan, but last night was certainly not encouraging. Last night was NOT what I was expecting to see out of the gate.

I was hoping to see a more polished team to open the season given we have two grad students, three seniors, and two juniors. Lewis is obviously still chiseling this team together and has a lot of work to do before they will be even close to polished. There were some nice moments but more bad than good. We obviously needed this game. Lewis said he was pleased the team showed some fight and that he didn't see any in the scrimmages and didn't know what he'd get against Georgia State. The first half looked like a Whitford team. It was sickening to watch.
I sure hope Sparks was ill or something. His performance was horrendous.

I’m assuming Lewis did not reference a Sparks illness/injury in the post game interview?

Sparks is very concerning. He flat out looked awful last night. Hill is dynamic in terms of getting to the rim, but doesn't finish well and the rest of his game leaves a lot to be desired. Watts looked pretty good. Role definition certainly not clear yet. Like one poster said, my optimism meter went down a great deal after last night.

Didn’t look very disciplined on offense last night. Didn’t seem to be trying to run a lot of set plays or trying to get it inside to our all-MAC center.
Liked Hills aggressiveness especially in the second half when he actually started hitting his shots.
Surprised Coach Lewis said he was “encouraged” by the teams effort last night. Seems out of character for him to say so. Hope he’s not prepping the fan base to mentally accept “effort” over wins. Guess we’ll know more about what this team is about after the Dayton game.

The expected part was that we would have trouble playing together on D, and might have some problems putting things together with new players on offense
Whatever was wrong with Sparks seems the key to the season. If he is strong in the post a lot of other things work better.
Pearson should be part of the offense, even though he did not shoot well last night. He had his head in the game, hit the boards well, but too often the D was all over him as he had to be a primary scorer. That should Sparks and he should be getting more open shots with others helping with the scoring more (especially Hernandez).
Hart just wasn't ready, coming off injury, he will improve, especially shooting, but also with his athleticism. Ben was the good Ben, and will be a plus. I was not disappointed with Hill, Gorosito, Watts, Jones who were not always in synch but their effort was good, and they can play. Hernandez I expected a bit more than we saw, he didn't seem to fit very well.

GaSt was picked 12/14 in the SunBelt They will do a bit better, have so many new faces they are under rated. Both these teams are better than last year, may be much better than expected. One thing was story of the game. Their new guys inside completely outplayed Sparks who we expected to be a force.
