I would agree but I want to see how we play against Dayton on the road and Indiana State at home.
Are we that bad or are we playing to the level of the competition.

Come on…..no one giving props to Sparks’ 9/12 FTs?

Coach Lewis comments after the game on the radio were brutally honest. He called it an embarrassing performance. Players didn’t come into the game with the right attitude, too selfish, no spark. Said no excuse for having 19 turnovers against a team that wasn’t really playing defense (ie a Div 3 school). Said something to the e effect of if we play for ourselves individually we’re going to have a miserable year.
Gives me some hope he at least knows what needs to be corrected. Can he do it though?

This game predictably a ragged one. Lewis focuses on improving team play, which again is very predictably a problem with so many new players and no guards returning. That will improve.
I'd have been surprised if we had shown in synch offense and defense at this point. Or if the team was fired up and intense against D3... Lewis has to work on that whoever the opponent, if we're going to be really good.
Too much real bonehead play is the ragged part, 19 TO many just lazy passes, and losing the ball on the dribble. You just don't throw the ball back under your own basket into a crowd.
We gave up 20+ points on TO, many layups. On D we didn't help when we should and too often let guys get open. You are guarding a guy hitting every 3 he shoots, you don't help and don't leave him wide open.
Lewis I'm sure wants to change that some players try to do to much 1 on 1 or 1 on 2... Notably Hernandez and Hill are too used to getting away with that.
Hill did make a few nice plays. But didn't look for others enough when he drew a crowd. He's playing a lot for good reason, can improve. Hernandez had some steals on D, but also lost his man, got out of position
Watts, the vet, had 6 assists 2 TO in contrast to other guards. Pearson showed his experience. Jones was Jones, good D, no offense.
Gorosito a bad game, poor shooting, did not get ball to others.
Give Sparks some credit. He hit FTs. But just has to block out more and not let people blow past him. We're obviously trying to use him differently, not exclusively on the low block, that's a WIP.
Hart wasn't selfish, needed the court time, isn't there yet, but got some boards, played pretty hard. Will get better. We need him if Hernandez doesn't figure out how to fit in.
Burch is raw but has potential.
Most players C/C+. Our 3pfg a D-. Team play can get better shots, and that can greatly improve if we get Hart/Gorosito going.
Where was Bearden?

Going to be a long season I predict Yep. We have a lot of time to improve, but we also have a lot of improving to do. All of the optimism I had coming into the season is gone.

I'm mostly disappointed that Sparks is out of shape and won't be able to log a lot of minutes against a team with good interior players

A team full of players out for themselves isn't going to be a very good team. I hope Lewis can knock some sense into them.
On Lewis has assembled a team full of good players. Unfortunately that doesn't guarantee they are going to come together as a good team. It's all about attitude.

"If we don't hang together we will all certainly hang separately". Dayton will embarrass us. Bad passes are to be expected because of so many Indiana Allstars on the team. They are used to receiving passes instead of passing the ball.

Lewis talks here about Franklin coach and style, and that he coached this game a little different. Gave everyone minutes. Didn't really set up play, wanted players to play in the flow, to recognize and change, to figure out some things on their own.
Says we are behind as a team, have good talent, but other teams are in same situation.
To me this is just not a surprise...
It is unlikely to me that anybody is all that much "out for themselves." Certainly not a team full of players. Still any talented confident player can make that mistake of trying to do too much, and building a team out of new players is not a quick process, and until the team jells there will be problems for everybody to figure out how best to play with each other. That much is situation normal.
We do have new players who need to make some individual changes. That process takes some time. Hernandez was best player on a bad team, was always first option and used to having the ball in his hands, that's not close to true here. Reportedly is bought in on making a transition, and he was not a ball hog, but I'm not sure how he fits in right now, it's an issue he is 1 on 1 oriented. Hill is a JUCO where 1 on 1, and run and gun is pretty much SOP. That creates some learning curve and also just breaking habits.
Lewis doesn't seem to me to say anyone has a bad attitude, more bad habits and a lot to learn, as a team.

Based on coach's comments regarding selfish play, we really haven't seen the team play like they're supposed to so who know what our offense is supposed to look like, but it makes me wonder ...
Are Hernandez, Gorosito, Hart and Brittain-Watts supposed to be shooting the ball? I ask because they've taken a pretty fair share of the shots, a good percentage of those pretty wide open, and don't seem to be hitting at what most would consider a successful level.
Is Hill supposed to be taking this many shots in the offense? I didn't expect much from him, but he seems to be one of the few players who can occasionally hit a shot. Maybe he should be passing more but until those passes are rewarded with something other than bricks, I might just prefer he do something on his own. Because, although I do want this team to come together, I'm currently not sure how many loses I want to watch while we clank shots off the rim from 22 feet.
Is Burch going to get a little more run in these next few games? I know it was just Franklin, but it was just Franklin for all his teammates, too, and he looked a lot better than did some of them. I know he's a freshman, but sometimes even a coach that doesn't like to play freshmen has to suck it up and admit there are exceptions.
Should I feel weird that I'm not sure who should be our starting low post player? I was happy to see Sparks hit some FTs but I just don't see him finishing inside against comparable athletes, and I'm not sure he's going to be able to draw fouls like he did against Franklin. For all his shortcoming, Ben at least has a few decent post moves and he's reliable at the FT line. Maybe you continue to start Sparks, but I at least no longer curse under my breath when Hendriks comes in; sometimes it's a sigh of relief.

It is disorienting that we have a decent backup big man! And then, we should all feel weird on general principles who spend time typing away here...
These two games have too many early season issues to show much about what we are going to be doing.
Hart and Gorosito are very good shooters, should be shooting 3's. Watts, he's a play maker, WIDE open 3's with no other options.
I just don't know what Hernandez is supposed to be doing.
Hill is better than some expected, but should be passing more. AND learning how to run the offense.
Burch is a freshman, I doubt he gets much time until later in the season. He is very quick and pesky on defense, so later on he may get some minutes when it counts. He and Hill together in a pressing defense could be pretty annoying to the opposition.

I like Burch a lot and Hill is a stud!
Sparks will get his points and rebounds if he can continue to knock down free throws.
We got to take care of the ball better and should be able to with very senior pg play.
It’s early so let’s see how we play at Dayton and at home against Indiana State.
