I have been seeing some names thrown around various threads on here so I figured let’s get a thread just dedicated for next season’s Head Coach, whether it be Neu or someone new (no pun intended).
Wish list for possible coaches with Ball State ties: 1) Bryant Haines- Indiana DC 2) Eddie Faulkner- Steelers RB Coach 3) Jason Eck- Idaho HC 4) Jay Bateman- Texas A&M DC 5) Justin Lustig- Penn State STC 6) Daryl Dixon- Army Passing Game Coordinator
Obviously the Head Coach doesn’t need to have Ball State ties, but it’s always fun when he does. In reality if the new coach has Muncie ties it will probably end up being Joey Lynch 😑

Lustig should be on Mitchell's list, but I'm not sure BSU will still be on Lustig's list

Yeah we can’t pay Haines plus he’ll stay at the P5 level.

Haines has a pretty good resume. Plus, he’s been working with Cignetti as a coordinator for 5 years - very good mentoring, given Cignetti’s coaching lineage and success. I think BSU would be intriguing to Haines but I see him staying with Cignetti for a few more years. Haines is still pretty young too.

I still like the HC from a lower level, up and comers, as great targets. Although Haines played at BSU, his perspective since has been higher - that may stymie his ability as a first time HC (recruiting, facilities, etc.). First time HCs = 50/50 crap shoot.

I’d prefer a guy with proven success at this point. Someone who has shown the ability to manage games and all that entails. (Clock, feel for situational decisions, etc). Mike was fantastic in developing a family feel in the program and is well liked by players and parents. That’s great, but you gotta win too and do whatever it takes to get there. And you have to be able to manage your staff. Identify and hire good ones and expect them to do their jobs at a high level. If they don’t, be willing to remove them. Loyalty is important but at some point you gotta cut bait if it’s not working. Demand excellence in fundamentals. Every season we see the same mistakes and hear “that’s on me” and it never changes. Dumb penalties, inability to execute in winning time. Gotta have an HC who won’t tolerate that. Etc etc.

Look for a successful HC from a lower division. Knows how to win and manage a program. Don’t care whether they have BSU ties just that they’re a proven winner

Was Neu on our wish list after the 2015 season?

I love our former BSU players but it's too painful to fire them when they fail. We've got pretty good backing from former players right now. What happens to that support when Mike gets fired?
I'm for looking for an outsider. Unfortunately some of our guys are looking to be very good coaches and I'm very happy for them.

At one point someone here mentioned the staff from Ferris State. I looked them up and they looked solid. Consistent inning at their level and solid staff with continuity. My only question would be how they would recruit, handle NIL, and maneuver the transfer portal.

My vote would be to keep Neu.
