I have been seeing some names thrown around various threads on here so I figured let’s get a thread just dedicated for next season’s Head Coach, whether it be Neu or someone new (no pun intended). Wish list for possible coaches with Ball State ties: 1) Bryant Haines- Indiana DC 2) Eddie Faulkner- Steelers RB Coach 3) Jason Eck- Idaho HC 4) Jay Bateman- Texas A&M DC 5) Justin Lustig- Penn State STC 6) Daryl Dixon- Army Passing Game Coordinator Obviously the Head Coach doesn’t need to have Ball State ties, but it’s always fun when he does. In reality if the new coach has Muncie ties it will probably end up being Joey Lynch 😑 None of these guys are coming. You need to look at the FCS/D2 level. Maybe not but you can call maybe one surprises you

I'm going to instantly look at gvsu, ferris state, NDSU, SDSU, USD, Montana, Montana State. Programs with multiple years of success. I can appreciate younger coaches for their future ambitions. But I hope we don't rule out an older coach who's been around and willing to stay around. Look at eastern chris creighton, Ohio (good ol frank), Miami of ohio. Not saying hire those guys but just how long those guys have been at each program.

On second look I could get behind Jason Eck, he is the type of guy we are seeking. Otherwise, what are we looking at in that list? A bunch of coaches at better gigs (higher pay, better situations, etc.) Let's be very honest with ourselves, BSU is not at the level of those coaches (pay, facilities, etc.) Also, with the exception of one of those coaches none have head coaching experience and Lustig is only one year at a D2 school. You have to go back to Dave McClain to find a BSU head coach with a record above .500 who was a first time coach at BSU. Have we not learned our lesson. Hire an experienced head coach. But do we really want Frank Solich who is just coaching to 6-6 each year and riding out what little bit of coaching they have left in them? Is that the way to build a championship program? Is Central Michigan doing that now? I would rather take the excitement of "Row the Boat" and keep that momentum going. WMU did not hire the right coach to keep the Boat Rowing. I remember there was a BSU administrator years ago who told me that every coach we hired he told them, "You will be gone in 4 years one way or another." We need to understand that we are not a destination job and that is OKAY! If we can embrace that and then build a great program that all of these new coaches want to come and take over. We win in that scenario because we have a great program that is desirable. We get winners, we keep winning and we get all the things we want. Our current BSU model is losing; football games, fans, alumni, etc. Get a coach that will create the championship culture and the nurture that with every other coach that comes along. The page has turned in college athletics and either get on the train that we build a culture and recruit coaches and players EVERY year to be a part of that, or keep losing. Annual roster and coach turn over in all sports is a part of life now. As Billy Beane said in Moneyball, "Adapt or die."

Why haven't we thought of that before...
What is the budget you will allocate for that? How much is it worth?
What revenue do you expect to fund that vision, from where?

Wrong approach, wrong attitude. Culture isn't a budget it's a mindset. Was the budget different when Hoke was winning? But were the stands full? Was the budget different when Lembo was winning? But were the stands full? Was the budget different when WMU was Rowing the Boat? But were the stands full? Cignetti has not changed the budget at IU, he has changed the culture. Hire a winning coach to start and build the culture. When the time comes that we can no longer afford said coach, wish them farewell and go find the next winning coach who can continue the culture and fits the budget we have. "If you build it (the championship culture) they will come (fans, coaches, players).

Most of that just doesn't apply right now in an era of increased costs and NIL expense, or it is in large part dead wrong. Cignetti and staff is paid more than past IU coaching staffs, has had some renovations and improvements in facilities, and has a quite generous NIL budget.
Lembo, Hoke both coached in different eras, first of all, without NIL demands. And as much success as they had they did not rebuild culture. Lembo's "culture" disappeared as he lost assistants he could not pay. When Hoke's short lived success was at its end as a very good senior class graduated, he bailed. After complaining for several years he needed money for assistants. WMU did have a big budget.

What about Mike Uremovich from Butler? Has Indiana/Midwestern ties. Has Butler ranked, knows the midwestern recruiting, and has spent time in the MAC.
Or Mike Jacobs from Mercer. OL from OSU, 83-18 lifetime record. Spent time at Purdue, again knows the midwest and is a proven winner.

Hoke 2007 (7-6) - 13,085 Avg, 2008 (12-2) - 19,201 Avg, only 2008 game below 20,000 was the first game Lembo 2012 (9-4) - 12,930, 2013 (10-3) - 13187 in fairness, this is when MACtion started, so the late season games stunk, but still about 3-4,000 per game over where we are today. This year - 10,500 with one to go. which will probably bring that average down. We drew just over 6,000 to our weekday game last week. And that is a tickets sold number plus students.

I think it was 2006 that our home game with IU was a sellout. We lost on a last second field goal.

So, in other words BSU has never come near to filling the stands except one year coming sort of close. But your larger issue is that the current cost structure of FBS football is so far beyond the means BSU football's potential market that even if you put two paying customers in every seat of the stadium for every game, you would still be deep underwater in covering the costs.

BSU drew over 17,000 with a 20,000 seat stadium in the 70s when McClain was here. Also Wallace's 1st yr the 10-1 team may have been at that level.

No doubt winning years are better. How much new revenue?
At our current ticket prices, additional fans doesn't raise as much money as you think.
The rosy attendance figures you cite were in 4 years out their tenure, where you you say we had much better culture The other years were not a prize.
We still were losing money big time and subsidizing FB under both coaches, and costs were not escalating as they are now.
So, that "culture" change has to translate into wins. It has to allow us to find new fans, where demographics aren't as good, and it's harder to do so, all things equal. AND, we have to raise ticket prices to pay for escalating expenses. AND you seem to be assuming it can survive the rocky transitions.
Budget definitely matters here.

The good old days! Coaches, expenses and staff much cheaper too...
