The handwriting had to be pretty clear that he wouldn't play much next year, barring injury to someone. Whitford showed he will rotate three guards and then with Sellers a bit at 2. Should we pull a guard out of the hat this spring, he might have fallen further down the depth chart. It might work out this way for both sides. But it makes getting at least one impact guard important this spring. We are a sprained ankle away from some serious depth issues.

A lot of posts here are garbage...Smith was going to be the 3rd PG next year...Persons will start and Kipaway will likely play minutes at the #1 and 2. I think Smith realized this or was told this and transferred...now many that did not want him on the court suddenly miss him as the door is hitting him in the ass. Please...to lose him does not hurt at ALL.
OUT.

No one here thought Smith was good but he added depth. Right now we kinda have 2 point guards who are really shooting guards if this does not kinda concern you especially if there is an injury then I want some of what your smoking

Smith will play for four different teams/schools in his college career. I wonder about these kids these days... how can you find continuity and fit in a program doing that? Hate to see him leave from a depth perspective, but don't see it as an insurmountable loss.

Yeah, I think everyone is basically saying the same thing, just in slightly different ways. Having three guards on scholarship on April 15th isn't good for my blood pressure, but we'll see what happens in the coming weeks.

This explains our interest in a 5th year senior guard transfer. We will surely sign another guard now, although we might be OK with Sellers playing some time at guard along with 3 pretty good guards.
This is a good chance to add a quick guard and having that option for some situations would be a good addition.

I'm surprised at how many people think this hurts our depth. If someone doesn't help the team in any way I don't consider it depth. Just because he has a "PG" next to his name on the roster doesn't mean he is value added. I already knew he would play nearly as much as last season but now that he is gone I am very pleased to know that he won't touch the court.
A 5th year guard probably won't be much value added either but in my opinion it will be more than smith and could bridge the gap to a 2017 point guard.
