I would also add that at least one MAC tourney victory is an absolute, non-negotiable requirement for the continued employment of a Ball State University Men's basketball coach in his fourth year. If a coach fails to reach this benchmark, termination should be effective immediately upon the final horn of the 4th loss, and he should be escorted without delay to the boundary of campus by BSU police with no further access to the team or any Ball State University facility.

Soooo you would rather see us be a perennial top four contender versus us having a deadline for winning a championship? I'm glad my company doesn't subscribe to that kind of philosophy in sales. Hey guys, don't worry about that goal, there literally is NO deadline to reach it, just be a top four producer and all is well. By your logic, we could be five, ten years or more into a coaches tenure with zero titles and that should be enough?
No. Your company would rather have you be #2 in sales every year, and make a big profit forever. If you were hired as CEO of a turn around company, you would not insist on being #1 in sales as much as you would want rapidly turn around the trend and increase all measures of success, and most important to make a profit over the long haul. You would not fire your sales team if they failed to reach any single target and were doing a great job on other measures. So. If we are in the top few teams every year, that consistency and program stability would be more important to me than if a coach brought in a few high level recruits, won a championship and did not build a roster and get us to a position where we had consistent excellence. Especially when he leaves with the program in a shambles. Ronnie Thompson might in some alternative universe have brought us a recruit or two and won a championship and still destroyed this program. Rick Majerus brought us recruits and won, but he also brought us a very good assistant coach, some young recruits who stayed and won. Had Rick NOT won a championship with a great team and then moved on (as we he was going to do, win or lose, after a very few years) we'd have still had a great coach who built something. I want a great team and for it to pay off long term. I'd rather be in that championship game frequently and win it often, of course. When I said top 4 I did not mean to say #4 every year is good enough...so I am happy to amend my statement to 1-4 every year if somehow that was the way anybody read it. Could be any number of ways we are at the very top, best program in the MAC, and winning that tournament eludes us for X years. Especially if you start out with nothing in the tank...

Glad you are not AD if a coach comes in and gets the program turned around in 4 years, and, we know we are now one of the best programs instead of the worst, and, we have prospects to continue on at that level. And then you fire him? Of course it is somewhat more likely that such coach can't be kept than you have to worry about firing him anyway. Buffalo won the championship, I do not think they were the best team or that they are the best program. Not sure I want a program run the way theirs is run.

Really, I would want sales production. That's the only meaningful measure there is for a sales force. Obviously you haven't spent a single day working in the corporate sector.

So, if we win zero MAC tourney games in 4 years, you would still say the program is "turned around" and that we are "one of the best programs"? Do you often buy a lot of pseudoephedrine...you know...at pharmacies?

Do you often buy a lot of pseudoephedrine...you know...at pharmacies? That would be pretty unusual. We have done that 3 years. But, I don't judge the coach as a failure this year. So, I guess I'd have to look at all the facts. I'd not expect that to happen next year with our team.

Don't forget to tattoo 666 on the coach's forehead and shave his head to expose those little pesky horns

Well, I will be out buying some kind of drug if we don't win a MAC tourney game. But I might not fire the coach automatically...I'll look at some other things.
Hell he might have just signed a Steve Payne clone or a Bonzi Wells clone and brought in two transfers this year who turn into McCurdy and Kidd.
Or. Won a hell of a lot of games and been jobbed of a MAC tourney game by MAC officials. I'll look at the whole picture. But seriously, I am more worried about losing a good coach than missing firing a bad one here.

I generally agree with the General, but what if we were seeded as a 1-4 team and lost by 1 point after a bye but went on to go deep in the NIT??
And, Halftime , what is your sales force achieved 95% of the goal in a down economy, but were outstanding in virtually every other measure including their customers loved them??!!!
Really, you would fire them??? I won't ditz you but I don't think so!!

If we made the NIT and made a deep run Id be fine with it but Im not sure a 2,3 or 4 seed from the Mac tournament who loses its first game makes the NIT

Why are we talking about hypothetical scenarios where there is disappointment? What a losers' mentality!
If this happens we worry about it then?
Why are we talking about firing a coach after the best season in a decade with a good year coming?

I guess when your coach is 0-3 in the conference tourney, 0-4 isn't exactly a far-fetched possibility, is it?
