They're still in the group of G5 conferences. Tell us, what happened the last time NIU went for greener pastures?
The traveling to UCONN and Tulane and Tulsa and USF and UCF would be awesome!
This isn't taking into account one of the better programs in Houston would be gone with the possibility of UC.
NIU has a 24,000 seat stadium for football with modest attendance (better than BSU by a lot). Does the AAC all of sudden change this? Do people start running to see Temple and UCONN? You always want to prepare yourself for the next step but that is a loooooooong way off if ever.

All I know is we can't beat NIU. Or so it seems.

I also think the G5 conferences are getting further and further away from the Big Boys dinner table to the point where there will be major changes down the road. How far down the road? Who knows....

I can see the G5 basically becoming semi pro and detached from the NCAA

All I know is we can't beat NIU. Or so it seems. Sure, but that doesn't exactly mean they are ready for major college conference membership... NIU looks at the bottom feeder in each major conference and says, we can do that. I don't see that as a quest for excellence. The big conferences don't have much to gain from admitting them, so it doesn't look to me like something that justifies a huge investment to try for.

They've already committed to a $100+ million improvement campaign for athletics. It's not open for debate. It's happening. If NIU looks at the bottom feeder of each conference, then projects itself into such a role, then good. That is how you build a program if your goal is to participate in major college sports. Not everyone can start at the top. It's growth.

You're right again, as always. They should stay right in the MAC. It's always going to be the best option.

When every other sport has to make these long road trips, there will be a rather large downside.
Conferences are not just football...and that stadium helps football be more credible only if fans fill it. They should worry that they get what they dream about.

My point is that they really can't be excellent in a major conference. Rarely happens if ever. Boise State is closest case in football, maybe BYU but both have been higher level than BYU. Basketball and the tournament allows you to move to national impact w/o conference costs. Still very expensive usually.

There is another thing. Being best in the MAC for example may be a relatively mediocre football team, but also an excellent performance at our level of resources.
Can't really change that resources thing probably
