Big 12 To ExpandWe all new it was coming. Just wondering what kind of vacuum it will create in other conferences, and how the backfill will play out.

I expect Houston and either BYU or Colorado State will join.
If 2 AAC members bolt, that conference may dissolve as other teams defect.

NIU has a Desmond Bane-esque thread on this. Most reasonable ones know they're not going to the Big 12 but would love to get into the AAC.
They think the Chicago market helps them.

Was up at NIU, and the administration is actively discussing how to get it done. The Chicago market is a draw for the Big 12. They have a case, especially with their $100+ million athletic fundraiser going on. Joining the Big 12 would increase donations and get their facilities in line with at least ISU or TCU. My bet is the Big 12 (10) would like to grab six teams over time, and I see Houston, Colorado State, BYU, Tulane, UCF & Cincinnati coming into the league. The Houston, Denver, SLC/Provo, New Orleans, Orlando and Cincinnati markets would all be a plus. Memphis is another option. That would leave the AAC with only eight schools left. They may try to poach the MAC, because I don't see them dissolving with some joining the MAC. I do not think the Big 12 will want Rice, SMU, or Tulsa. Small, private schools, already in TV markets that the Big 12 already has exposure. Expect some MAC teams to jump ship, or some of the CUSA newbies wanting to leapfrog into the AAC.

University of Cincinnati fully expects to be invited and the Cincy media is saying that UC is the Big 12's first choice. I see them adding two teams now and perhaps two later. We'll just have to wait to see how the dominoes fall.

NIU has a good argument with the Chicago market, but they don't have enough of a following. Akron could make a case for the AAC, with its facilities and basketball success. Buffalo is a solid market as well. In the end, I don't see any MAC teams leaving. Nobody else wants them.

We'll just have to wait to see how the dominoes fall. I live in Cincinnati as well and I think the local sports media is its usual delusional self on this issue. UC may not realistically be in top 4 choices for a Big 12 expansion. This is the same media who gave UC a 75% chance of being invited to join the ACC, only to later learn they were never even actually under consideration. Oh well it's not any more ridiculous than the continued meme that Bob Castellini is some sort of business guru and a great owner for the Reds.

I understand the Chicago market being a draw but how many people there care about NIU? It's a pro sports town. Illinois doesn't even seem to be that big of a deal.

Kind of agree but you have to admit Loyola of Chicago wasn't invited to join the Mo Valley due their on court success or outstanding facilities.

Here is a new article from The Cincinnati Enquirer. It ranks the possible expansion candidates using the five criteria points given by the Big 12 : strength of athletic program, fan base, media market, academic standards and reputation. The funny thing is The Enquirer doesn't rank UC highly in any category until the fifth and final one where for some reason without any real explanation they put UC at the top of the list for reputation. Apparently those years of Bob Huggins running a de facto prison league basketball program ,on campus (sometimes violent) crime, an illegal officer involved shooting, and losing university presidents every three years all add up to a solid public perception and standing. www.cincinnati.com/story/sports/college/university-of-cincinnati/2016/07/20/big-12-criteria-how-uc-might-fit/87355332/

The MAC is perfectly designed to remain intact through these transitions. No school really has a lock on any great untapped market. And no school can find success in both major sports at the same time. We're all stuck in this purgatory of being FBS without really being FBS.

I heard Huggins with Marc Patrick years ago on 1260 AM (this ages me) and it was easily the worst I've ever heard. He just gave one word answers and acted like he had so many better things to do. Luckily, Patrick had been doing it long enough that he got a little snarky back. A worse interview even than Bobby Knight.

NIU is delusional with their ambitions.
Huggins is actually more sane, quite a radical comment on college sports...
