Purdue football was once perhaps middle of the pack. But, realistically, it's saving grace was always only that it was almost always better than IU football. By spending millions to pay off this coach and hire a credible coach they, maybe, can again achieve that lofty goal.
I believe you are right that Mitch is not going to make that a priority. Without the tradition, alumni support and cultural status that football has at some schools, even in a power conference where nobody should lose money on football, you have to wonder if they can afford to do even that much. And if it is worth it to do it.
And, if they can't make it, you have to wonder if it makes sense for us mere mortals in the MAC to endorse and adopt as a model being a pale imitation of the power conferences with none of the economics that go with it.

I also question whether Miles is such a super hire anyway. He's had LA and TX to recruit from. He can't beat Alabama. When was the last good quarterback he's had? Taking stud QB's and turning them into nobodies was kind of a low-key storyline when he was at LSU. Dude had all the talent in the world, with very little in-state competition in recruiting, and usually underperformed.

Fleck was mentioned every time Purdue was mentioned today. He is a douche but he is smart he might turn it down if offered. PU fanbase might also go crazy if they hire another MAC coach

Look for Brock Spack from Illinois State to be a finalist. He was a former assistant to Joe Tiller at Purdue, prior to becoming the HC at ISU.

Spack will only get a courtesy interview. Pelini, that may be interesting.

Roll the dice.....Lane Kiffin. Can't possibly be worse.
Probably makes more as a Bama asst. than the $2.1M Purdue could cough up
