This will give us a reason to watch and maybe give us something to look forward too

I just hope they get him in there before the game is a blowout. If it were me id start him and just see what happens.. The downside is getting him crushed or just destroying his confidence. The plus side is if he is decent he can gain some valuable experience. For those who have forgot or just want a refresher Paddock was a very highly rated QB on rivals/scout/247.. He chose us and those rankings were changed literally overnight. We were his only offer and the reason for that according to everyone his size was a real knock. I searched a lot and reached out to many many people and every one of them did nothing but praise Paddock... Everyone said he would shine in the mac. Reports from this year are he is as advertised and the staff loves him. If he had received equal snaps he would be number 2 on the depth chart. I was also told that he was/is/would be capable of pushing Riley for the spot next year. Same person said he did not think it would happen but it was not out of the question if Riley struggled I am also told he has "it" You never know though until he has played some college games. You think you have something and then what you get is something vastly different..

This will give us a reason to watch and maybe give us something to look forward too Or. If things go badly for the kid, which is fairly likely since he's unlikely to be able to do more than Riley, it doesn't do much for him, the team's confidence in him next year, or our morale. There is a downside. I'd say suffer with Plitt a known quantity. Give the redshirt kid some chance as the game spirals down... don't make him suffer the rough early going as the opponent plays hard to establish a win important to them. Let him play later with them more lax. Unless you really think he could make us competitive in this game. Somehow that the team will rally around him, be a different team. Which seems remote.

All the above could also happen and I agree I do not think it makes us competitive. I do not expect anything remarkable and I am probably being selfish and hoping it would provide some kind of reason for future optimism.

I don’t think we need to baby Paddock. If he struggles in his first couple games as a college QB and that destroys his confidence for next year, then he is not our QB of the future. Give him meaningful snaps, and let’s see how he handles adversity.

I am just concerned that this team, this week, is damaged goods and nothing meaningful is really possible under those conditions.
A "long" regular week of practice maybe we can recover and when things are normal or close to it, I'd buy your approach.
But with a team I'd be surprised has it together enough to make the experience good for him, I don't like the logic.

If playing Paddock will blow a redshirt year absolutely not. Throwing the kid into the fire at this point with a patched together offensive line will prove nothing. Let him prove in the spring under controlled play. This year is almost history. Don't play around with a player's health at this point. Put Plitt or Hank in. You are suggesting we put Plitt or Hank’s health in jeopardy? Somebody has to play QB. Is our offensive line ever good? Play the kid. It was pointed out that you can play four games and not risk a redshirt year. By definition if you play you risk injury. It may not be fair to play a freshman with a leaky offensive line. Since the redshirt is not at risk, I guess you could play him but I would be very careful. If we play a freshman and I was a defensive coordinator I would blitz the hell out of the kid and try to get him to make a mistake. Chances are he would take some nasty blows.

Especially if he starts. Later in game, playing their second and third string not so likely.

I think we should play Hollis Hughes. Doe he still have eligibility?

I would like to see Hank play but most in the position to know say he is not ''all that''.

I think its worth playing him since it doesn't burn a redshirt year.

I think its worth playing him since it doesn't burn a redshirt year. Sure, the issue is how much and when.

I'm at a loss as to why anyone thinks Paddock, who had exactly zero other FBS offers, is the answer. We stole him from - *checks notes* - Southern Illinois. And after seeing how this staff has developed Riley Neal in year 4 of his career, do you honestly think they sprinkled magic QB dust on Paddock that suddenly makes him the answer 8 games into his true freshman season? He'd get destroyed. He's 6-foot-nothing and nobody's saying he's the next Drew Brees.
It's over, people. We'll be lucky to hold onto Schott so the next staff, whomever they may be, can turn him into something. If Schott bails (and who could blame him?), this program is going to be staring down a very long, dark tunnel...and the only light they see will be a freight train coming from the other direction.

No one says Paddock is the answer. But we’ve heard the staff really likes him and since his redshirt is not in jeopardy, we’d kinda like to see what he looks like. Might be a train wreck but we’d still like to see if he can do anything, especially if Riley is done. Just trying to get a frame of reference and have something interesting to talk about.
And yes it might be a fight to hang onto Schott.
