So we don’t care if we’re any good because we’re ball state? Everybody cares. But that's different from being able to do it easily.

By the fourth year of his recruiting we should have a title, no less than his fifth year of recruiting. How the heck did EMU get to be that much better....Buffalo.....Toledo is the consistent winner, how? Is it that damn hard to look at other successful MAC teams and answer these questions? It’s not just about the money, though it helps. How many of those teams have a history of a championship every 4 years? OK. Assume all do, or can, and there is some easy answer, how exactly do we beat the other 7 teams EVERY other 4th year? And again, how many of those wizards do it on our budget? I like the ambition but it isn't realistic, and not for a coach starting from scratch at the bottom. A school might do it once, but can we really expect to capture lightening in a bottle like this. Again, in our first 25 years in the MAC, any player who played four years for the Cards pl@yed on a championship team. Buffalo and Akron were not members during these years. Buffalo has only come on strong the past few years, but they are coming on strong. Akron, not so, even though the beat Big10 West leader Norhwestern this year. Toledo has been strong forever - hate that cannon at UT, though I was at the game in Muncie we had our biggest comeback in Ball State history.

I want Neu to succeed so badly in Muncie but it when if you want to keep him and sign recruits then extend him this year. He has to have something beyond the AD's verbal endorsement. I can guarantee if he does not an extention he will lose kids. Signees have to think he will be here all four years of their contract. Theoretically this sounds right, but ... 1. Continually extending a coach so he always has a 4-year deal means we could never fire a coach because we could never afford to pay him off. 2. This thought process by a MAC level recruit also actually means the recruit expects to be on bad teams because a successful MAC coach will not be around for 4 years. He'll move on. I prefer this recruiting strategy by Neu, at least for the next year or so: "Son, you're right I don't have four years left on my contract. I've asked my AD to just sign one-year deals after my current contract expires because I believe in earning my way with results on the field, just like I expect my players to earn playing time with the results they produce on the field." Of course, that'd never work with kids who are swayed by multiple uniform combinations and so forth, but ...

I am not sure what I would do if I was in a position to make a final decision. He certainly has not won enough games to be offered an extension. You might be correct if Neu would talk about one year contracts and have the AD back him up.

How bad are things in the locker room when you have Neu calling out James Gilbert of all players for lack of effort? WTH?

Gilbert hasn't really impressed me this year. With the public comments about lack of effort in practice I wouldn't be surprised if he plays somewhere else next year as a grad transfer.

Yeah I’ve already predicted grad transfer for him. He definitely wasn’t happy this year. I don’t think they used him well. He was our lead dog and we didn’t really ride him. You could see him frustrated out there.
Will Huntley come back? I’m not convinced about that either.
The camping has not been happy since the Emu game.

If Huntley comes back healthy and in shape I think he would be the starter next year, but who knows.

I realize there’s been some wheels off moments, but for anyone looking to transfer whether a grad transfer or not, do they realize how they conduct themselves will probably effect their opportunities to land elsewhere. I don’t think Gilbert will have a problem finding a place though. Louisville just fired HC Petrino, there are two roster players transferring (not sure where), but there were supposedly around 20 other players that were wanting to know how to. They already lost a few recruits/commits as well. AD stepped in & fired HC trying to stop the bleeding. What a mess.

Yep we are not the absolute grease fed dumpster fire that Louisville is. We’ll lose some guys but certainly not like that mess. But we do have some issues nonetheless.

I have always felt a HC needs five full years minimum to show good progress especially at our level financially speaking.
What we did in the first 25 years of MAC play is no longer relevant in my view as virtually all our MAC competitors invested more heavily in their programs than we did (facilities and salaries etc.)!
We still have not caught up IMO!

All true. But if a coach has lost the locker room and guys are discontented and doing their own thing, at what point do you cut bait?

If a locker room is gone the coach should be also.

I hear that has happened but we’ll see tomorrow. The thrashings we’ve taken look like a defense that’s quit but maybe there will be effort tomorrow. Things definitely went south after the cmu game. But then cmu is really really bad. As in BG beat them bad.
