There’s been on multiple threads, opinions, comments of the current state of football. Not sure if everyone is tired or taking a break, but here’s another two cents.
I mentioned a round about comparison of Kentucky’s current payoff sticking with Stoops. Returns listed that it was a bad comparison overall. Maybe, however not necessarily. Be it the talent level & conference is not an immediate comparison to BSU/MAC situation, but we’re not able to woo sec talent throughout the MAC either. As it relates to this situation it does lend insight to certain milestones that a program undergoes.
I believe that talent, opportunities and coaching in college football goes in cycles. Without a doubt, as of late the only program that has had the ability to minimize the lows of such has been Alabama, maybe Clemson of relatively late (which has Alabama lineage of sorts).
Stoops has been at KY for 6 years. He has shuffled through multiple staff hires over that time, won/lost on the recruiting trail and just this year has seemed to put it together. The key I believe there is he has a decent staff, solid starting 22 and the real key- depth.
I look at Neu’s situation as not the same, however there are those milestones; staff, starting talent, depth. I figure (& no one will like this) he’s two years behind. At the start of this season the starting 22 could compare pretty well with the MAC’s talent - overall. The depth isn’t there, so when we loose a #1, there’s not much there to fill the void and it over burdens the other #1’s, schemes, and game in general.
Neu came in honoring the previous staff’s recruiting class. His second year were the start of his recruits. He hasn’t really started to build depth. I realize the focus of positions of need may need addressed, but maybe that’s been considered in some ways from the coaches perspectives.
Staff, well let’s see. New head coach coming in to a new level of coaching. I could see where he maybe felt comfortable learning some of the new job with having some in place assistance. Hind sight is 20/20, maybe changes should or would have been made differently. Hopefully a sober self examination will allow for what may make for a better situation here. I know there’s been suggestions on who needs to go or adjustments to be made. Believe the financial end of it will dictate more than not what happens here. With having some time in this, the understanding of how much it’s a business I believe we’ll see some changes come about. Not sure what those are, but hopefully in the right direction.
Talent & depth. Unfortunately selling a kid on a dream of what can be is tough. Probably need to hit the juco ranks hard. Focus on the immediate needs; lineman, db’s, maybe a qb. Build some depth with juniors coming in and further recruit to bolster. It won’t be an overnight fix, but it’ll be a start.
I appreciate the insights provided for/against looking at moving to the FCS level. Both independently and as a league. There is a lot of reason to drop, but I don’t believe that’s the answer. I believe there’s a larger issue that needs to be addressed and that’s with the NCAA. I think their view of their constituents and how they’re dependent on the schools in general needs revised. They need to update. Provide direction in developing and maintaining competitive means at every level. That is totally a discussion for its own.
Patience verses changes. I think Neu doesn’t/shouldnt go anywhere. Stabilize through staff adjustments and recruiting. If a new HC & staff were put in place I think it’d be a 3 more year deal.
