Having our bench WOULD have made a difference in some of those close losses. Can’t believe that someone would not think a healthy Hazen, Ish, and Gunn would not have been worth a couple of baskets a game from them as well as rested starters. WOW!

Or they could have turned it over in a key situation you just never know

We're talking which would be better, not that the guys playing were total bums and these guys were perfect. This game is very competitive. Small things make a difference. Depth is not just a small thing in success unless you have killer starters. On D there is big difference playing tired and with the best match ups. Depth allows you to avoid some problems there.

Another thing that might be noted is you mention GUnn being out.. Oddly we have won those two games what does this mean

I think they would have helped but who knows. The only thing you can say for certain is what actually happened

Just thinking back......
Historical statistics under Whitford indicate we are going to have injuries and suspensions which make us play at less than full strength for an entire conference season.
I would suggest to the forum that this is the norm and we are ill-prepared to deal with it.

I was just gonna post to ask who’s injury or suspension or both will we be blaming next year for coming up short again?

Over the years for some strange reason, there have been a lot of key injuries. The suspensions not so much. I guess I’m more aware or sensitive to the ones that hamstring us. Not necessarily a Whit problem. I’m sure a lot of teams work through similar situations. It seems to really take us down for some reason.

I would suggest to the forum that this is the norm and we are ill-prepared to deal with it. I do not think any historical stat would predict how badly we were hit last year, and I don't think we should expect anything like that as a norm. (Early on in his tenure we had not only lack of depth but lack of overall talent for starters with a full roster, which means the history doesn't produce good data to use).
I don't know what years you think are "normal" and predict anything.
Injury is largely a random variable. One argument that has a little validity is that Whitford has had more red shirt players. Would I rather have not had those transfers? Was that a good decision? Many other mid majors are going that way after all.
Big question is how the hell do you be "well prepared" to deal with it? VERY few teams are. Western was not prepared this year, for example when they suffered similar misfortune. The choice of going all freshman, having overwhelming talent to step up in case of injury that way is not very likely to be achieved by any MAC team.
Buffalo might afford to lose 2 of their top 8 and still be near the top of the MAC, but they would not be the team they are. Not other MAC team could do as well.

Our injury luck has been reasonable this year. How many starter games have been lost? Less than average I'd guess.
Losing the bench players only hurts so much due to the multiple roster gambles, and that's entirely on the shoulders of the coach. He bet on having basically zero injuries and lost....and paid the price.
But the apologists' narrative this year will be "Injuries, injuries, injuries". They will completely memory hole the roster issues. They are already headed down this path. In a year or so, they'll speak of this season as if we cobbled together a starting line-up of managers and cheerleaders.

It appears to me that taking a player known to have injuries is much more risky than one with no history. So therefore taking Hazen falls into the risk category as would Purdue's taking Gillis this yr or if we want to go back to Taylor his taking Jarrod Jones would have been an injury risk player. So to me coaches that do it & then have an injured player should not use it as an excuse. Just like German & Tyler for off court problems were risks MAC coaches will certainly do this.If it does not work they are responsible & it can cost them their job.

Tyler. Walker. Davis and Kiapway, while not suspended, benched for unknown reasons in their final year. BTW, these were all starter quality players, not just bench depth.

Depth to allow a coach to give a kid a rest? OK. Maybe depth for some situational issues. Great.
What I can't get in line with is this idea that depth is important because ... we never know when one or two or three of our players are going to show up with their heads up their asses and we need to be able to find someone on the bench who is ready to play that day.
That just screams poor preparation and motivation. All related to coaching with Whit just putting the whole team behind the 8 ball every game as he plays russian roulette with the lineup to see if he can find 5 players who are ready to go.
What some call a depth issue is really a coaching issue. And it's happened every year under Whit. Usually takes him two-thirds of the season just to figure out what his starting lineup and rotations should be.
