If you look at every metric and can say this is the best team we've ever had, then it must be bad coaching that has led to a record this poor. What other explanation could there possibly be? Is this Whitford's roundabout way of taking responsibility without, y'know, actually TAKING RESPONSIBILITY for it? No it's his way of trying to blame this all on "bad luck".

He coached against a lot of our teams at Miami (95-05) & I think the 95,98,00 & 02 were better than any team he has had what a stupid comment. Those teams would destroy our current group. No comparison. Not even close!

It's stupid anyway, we got an algorithmic bump this year on some indices because our SOS component number was better, not because our team was better.

Quote from Cincy coach Mick Cronin after they lost to Houston. This is what a real coach says after a loss. link

I'm trying to give that "best team we've ever had" some benefit of the doubt that by "we" he meant under his direction. Otherwise, I can name about 20 that were better. i'd name more, but I ran out of digits on the ole fingers and toes...

I'm 99% sure he meant the best team HE has ever had since he's been here, which maybe it is on paper but games are won on the hardwood. The comment I find the most infuriating is his continued bullshit about this being the best the league has ever been. That is just nonsense and the only way we get more than one team in is if Buffalo loses in the MAC tournament as it appears their resume is good enough regardless. But if the Bulls run the table, I don't see how Toledo or anyone else has the creds.

If so, hes got some explaining to do to explain how his best team is 11th out of a 12 team conference.

I think he meant HIS best team.....and I outd argue that. Yo have to factor in results! Maybe he meant this was his best potential team? If so, then this would be his biggest disappointment......not losing 18 straight.

Quote from Cincy coach Mick Cronin after they lost to Houston. This is what a real coach says after a loss. linkCronin is quoted in that snippet as saying his career would be in jeopardy when it becomes OK to lose. Whitford would be proof of that statement, since I would think his career is in jeopardy, at least his career as a head coach.

I guess I'm confused at to what a "metric" is. Is 3-point FG% a metric? Is Assist-Turnover ratio a metric? Because there's no way this year's team is better in those areas, even than Whitford's 3 previous teams.
And if those aren't metrics maybe he should pay a little more attention to non-metrics.

Considering his lack of recruiting prowess, I'd say his career as an assistant is also in jeopardy.

Even Whits players say things like “if we win we win, if we lose we lose.” There’s just not a burning, absolute desire to win in that program. I’m not saying it should be life or death, but neither should it be so readily accepted. And it starts at the top. But when you think everything points to your team being great OTHER than that pesky win loss record....
