Quick thoughts more to come later. Remember Notre Dame while I saw some things I liked I thought the same last year. I'm not sure on Wilborn at safety. We were lucky it could have been worse. Not sure if you could tell on TV but IU was much bigger than us on the lines and faster than us at the skill positions. That size and speed finally doomed us. Our corners played well we got killed in the middle of the field. I hated seeing there TE Hendershot kill us as he was supposed to be a card. Plitt played well and there is no reason that YO Heinz should ever come off the field. He is the one guy who can really explode

Overall I came away encouraged by the performance. Huntley should have a big year, especially when we go up against MAC defenses. I really hated he decision to kick the long fg down 14 with 11 minutes left. Anyone else think that was a poor decision?

I would agree with that, which is why I can't believe they are talking about giving Allen an extension. He just isn't the guy who is going to build a quality program at IU. I think it's time IU fans wake-up and realize they aren't going anywhere in football or basketball until Fred Glass is no longer doing the hiring. I agree that Glass sucks. But Miller and Allen aren’t that bad. Not that I expect them to hang Big Ten banners, but they can probably be good enough to not get fired. Miller will canned at the end of the 21-22 season.

Yo definitely made some big plays for us. Riley was quiet until very late in the game. Plitt seemed to be locked in on Hall, which is ok on the short passes, but questionable on some of the deeper passes vs. bigger db’s for IU. I like when Yo is in there, but Davis did have a big catch in the red zone.
I agree that we can’t draw too many conclusions from the first game, but at the very least we were competitive and did not get blown out. Coming in as the heavy underdog, I can’t be too upset. I do also agree with Cardfan that we need to beat Fordham in convincing fashion next week. Open up the playbook some, and put up 50+ points.

Overall I wasn't displeased. A little closer than expected. Wasnt enough to make me modify my 4-8 prediction. Penix's 2 ints kept it from getting a bit ugly before half. In the Neu era, the issue usually hasn't been games 1&2 as much as theyve often regressed towards end of precomference play thru the remainder of the year so im wait and see. Yoheinz should be getting more snaps the rest of Sept and beyond. Corners were decent, linebackers not so much today.

At least we didn’t get “rolled”. Some mistakes but they kept working. Did a great job against the run except the few runs by the QB. I like Plitt a lot (at least today).

No, I didn’t love Neu choosing the Fg late. Especially with an unproven kicker. But he tends to do stuff like that.

My takeaways:
1. Penix reminded me a lot of the ND QB last year in that he couldn't hit the broad side of a barn and, even when he did their receivers helped with drops. That's why I'm still not sold on the D. The better QBs in the MAC will be more accurate. That said, at least they didn't run wild against us despite their obvious size advantage on the line. 2. I was never a huge fan of Hagee, but I guess we saw today that we really didn't, and still don't, have anyone better. 3. We gotta be better on first down with the offense. Most of the game it seemed like we were in second-and-8 or second-and-7, very rarely second and short. We gotta get to second and short more often. 4. I can't believe that Tyler isn't one of our 3 best receivers. He should have had 10 targets today. We had some decent results from Davis, but Miller was basically a non-factor despite his 5 catches, and Hall, for as much as we feed him the ball, really didn't produce much despite his one highlight reel hurdle. 5. I know maybe Dunner hasn't adjusted well to WR, but holy crap ... this coaching staff has had a couple of years to figure out how to use this guy and the best they've come up with so far is having him fair catch kickoffs. I don't care whether it's WR or RB or some hybrid make-it-up position, get the kid on the field.
Complaints aside, I'm mildly encouraged. Just think we could be better and hope this won't be the best we play this year.

He’s still not a finished product but he played about as expected today.

Danny Kanell on commentary said it best, we still lack on “burner” type of players offensively. Our offense looked very methodical (which isn’t a bad thing unless your down big or late in the game). We did have a couple of long td’s due to miscues by IU’s defense so that encouraging that we can take advantage of mistakes. I just wish we had a WR in particular who can out run DB’s like Westbrook did to us multiple times. Overall I thought we looked pretty confident out there today. I think we just ran out of time to catch up. We had Damon Hazelton who Neu recruited he was and still is a difference maker even at VIRGINIA Tech.
