You want to see a bad stat line, check out Bumbalough from last night. This is what happens when poor recruiting forces you to give major time to kids who aren't ready. Yea he did not do much of anything last night. Like I said in an earlier post everything he does is a half second late. He did make some nice nice passes though that would have assists if any one could have made a shot. I also do not think he has a ever been a really "great" shooter. I think he is a good shooter that needs shots. I think I saw about 6 or 7 high school games and he would have stretches where he missed 3 or 4 in a row but then he makes one and all of a sudden he has knocked down 5 of the next 6. I did like that he took the one to the hole and drew the foul. That was the first time he has done that in college.

Just turn him loose and see what he can do.

Every now and then a player of Bumbo's size comes along who can attack the basket effectively and consistently....but they are very rare and have special skills (and are at an elevated injury risk). I think if he was this sort of player, we would have seen it or heard of it by now.

I don’t think he’s there yet physically. But the way he took games over in high school is what I hope we see eventually. Obviously he won’t put up the numbers he did but If he can make things happen one way or another, well we could use that.
You hope a kid mentioned as a mr. basketball candidate could look good early, but so far the results are uneven.

He was also an all state football player. He is a tough kid so I do not think he is any more of an injury risk than any one else

It's simple physics. Driving to the basket involves frequent collisions with bodies in the 230-260 lb range. If you weigh 170, you are usually going to come off worse in those collisions...including being frequently knocked to the hard floor. It's a risk, and every trip to the hoop raises the cumulative odds a bit higher. It's going to eventually raise your risk level significantly above that of a 170 lb player who hangs around the perimeter.

The bottom line is Bum is better than Thompson with more upside. With this current roster, he has to play and play more minutes. Bum will at least give you another scoring option which Thompson is not. The only way for him to get better is to play.

What did you guys think of the new video and MC Um, clown? Yeah, he's not good. His standard line is "I need you to make some noise." Clearly he's never been to Worthen before.

Alright, I've lifted my self-imposed posting ban a few hours early.
My overarching observation is that one good team found a way to win despite playing awful, while one mediocre to bad team found ways to lose despite its opponent playing poorly.
Other observations: 1) It's hard to fathom just how bad our highly touted bench was last night. The stats, which I believe someone posted here (but I'll recap and add some additional context), were awful, but they haven't really been much better in the other games. The bench logged 42 minutes: 3 points, 3 rebounds, 7 turnovers, 1 assist, 0 blocks, 0 steals, 1-10 shooting, and 1-4 FTs). You can't make up that kind of ineptitude. Coleman was horrificly bad, and Bumbalough wasn't much better. Hazen didn't really contribute, and Kroft looked lost. Arguing that we have depth is laughable at this point. 2) We just flat out can't shoot...from anywhere. Those of us on the board who understand our systemic recruiting failures knew this would be the case. The poor FT and 3-pt shooting have been discussed plenty, so I won't rehash that, but needless to say the FT shooting was shameful, and is very indicative of a major coaching issue. Even bad shooters learn to be serviceable at the line. 3) NKU had much more athleticism and basketball-savvy than us. You could just see it, despite the fact that they had an off night. 4) Mills, I see what you're saying about Teague, but overall I saw a different game than you did. Yes, Teague went AWOL late in both halves, but I blame that on our coach and his lack of strategy. Taj was easily the best player on the floor last night, and I thought he did a lot of great things - pulled down tough boards, defended extremely well most of the game, and passed quite well. He also brought some instinctive intangibles, like setting an impromptu screen on the baseline for Ish as he drove the basket for an uncontested layup. He had two really stupid fouls in the second half (his achilles heel over the course of his career), but 2-3 more fouls that were just awful calls. 5) That officiating crew was probably the worst I've seen in that arena since the Buckley era.
Much like Card Fan, Proctorp, and others, I've had it with this program. It is dead and going nowhere. I sat there last night after the buzzer wondering why I bought season tickets again and subject myself to the drive to the games.

Oh, and I forgot to add comments about the last play and Thompson overall. First, that's the best Whit could draw up? Seriously, it's shameful. You have to go for a three there anyway because of Teague and Walton being out. Second, I really love Thompson's story and effort, but he's overconfident on the offensive end. He cost us some possessions with quick shots. Having said that, kid, I think you're wrong when you say Walton is our best defender at guard. Thompson is easily the best defensive guard we have. Teague is the only other good defender we have, period. Despite the numbers this year, we are not a good defensive team. Mallers hit a little hot shooting stretch (which he does about every 4-6 games), but man, he gave up so many easy buckets on the other end.
Walton being out hurts our depth, but do you guys remember how bad he was in MAC games last year? MAC coaches know how to neutralize his athleticism.
One more thing...when is the last time you saw a team play zone in a close game with 1 minute to go? Let that sink in...their coach had so little confidence in our ability to shoot that he threw his team out there in a 2-3 zone with a small lead and one minute to go. We are going to see a ton of zone D this year.
