So had you asked me what is a leatherneck I would have bet money on it being a turtle. After seeing your pic and googling I realize it is a slang term for a marine. So is this a military type school?

Further googling tells me it is the only non military school to use a Military nickname it also tells me this which is oddly familiar
Western Illinois University is a public university located in Macomb, Illinois, United States. It was founded in 1899 as Western Illinois State Normal School. Like many similar institutions of the time, Western Illinois State Normal School focused on teacher training for its relatively small body of students.

BSu was in a conference before D1 with Indiana State, Illinois State, Southern Illinois and a few others midwest schools. I believe both Eastern and Western Illinois were part of it. It was something like Midwest Athletic conference or Heartland.

The real failure was when Southern I’ll. Pulled out because they felt they were to good to be a part of this loser conference. |

I thought the reason given by Southern Illinois was they didn't like us being in a conference with them. It was just us they despised losing to.
