Man, I did not see this coming. We had a terrible first half but we fortunate to be down one. I thought our offense would show up in the second half, but it left the building. Trey played hard. Mallers got his quiet 10. After that? We got nothing. 5 of the next 6 are at home. Maybe we are just an average team as kenpom says, #178 of 351 teams. I thought we might be around #100 by season's end, but that ship has sailed.

Oh Cmon, I’m not “judging a man.” This has nothing to with Trey the person and the things he’s fought through off the court. You have to separate Trey the man, who’s about as fine a human being around, from Trey the basketball player. Otherwise no player could ever be criticized for his/her play.
Trey is a big boy. He’s the starting center on a D1 basketball team. Like anyone he has to be able to take the good with the bad and sometimes he’ll get criticized. he was amazing the last two games. But today, when we needed him to play strong in the second half after playing a good first half, he didn’t. His play on the court is fair game. Otherwise don’t play. Fans critique play all the time, it’s what we do. But none of us are saying the Trey the person is bad. Not even close. He’s a fantastic representative of our university. We just need him to be at his best to win. This team is flawed and quite often Trey has to be a rock for 40 mins for us to have a chance. Like the last two games.
You haven’t played in the Nfl so you can’t get upset about your team. No that doesn’t get said. Or about nba fans. Or high school fans. I didn’t say I could play better. I can’t.

This was a NO SHOW!
Good consistent discipline (defense, rebounding) is in place with good coaches. They did not get the kids up for the second half.
And who are the leaders of this team,? ...feeble

We have dropped one notch below the D1 median line.
5 of next 6 at home. We are a 10-1 home team.

I kept waiting on them to make a (mini-)run but just kept hearing the clank of the rim with every shot so I turned it off and enjoyed my day.

And who are the leaders of this team,? ...feeble They didn't lose this game because of rebounding. They lost because Persons, Sellers, and Teague couldn't hit the broad side of a barn during most of the game. They combined I believe to shoot 4/23 from.the floor. You might be able to beat Longwood with those putrid shooting numbers but not a MAC school.

The most disturbing aspect of our losses is how we tend to collapse when the tide turns against us. Our five losses in the MAC have been by 20, 15, 18, 8 and 17. That is most troubling from a coaching perspective, IMO. Our staff appears to lack the ability to adjust in-game when the wheels are coming off. I’ve seen it far too many times. There are going to be times when your kids get rattled or the opponent has made an adjustment or exploited a weakness and starts to make a run. Our staff has to be able to stem the tide and keep us in the game. That has not happened, especially on the road. Championship teams are generally very good at home which we are and better than .500 on the road. Our road record is now 4-8. That is a harsh truth to face.

And once again we get the “didn’t have grit and toughness” needed quote from the coach. Seems to happen fairly often. Why is that.....? Part of that lack of toughness included what Whitford said was the inability to make plays when we got the ball inside.
It’s pretty disappointing and very telling that 5 years in a coach is still deer in the headlights when things aren’t going well. We still have very few answers on how to win when we aren’t shooting well. As whit said, “it’s just one of those games when you felt like when it rained it poured”. Again. Too often that happens. Every team has that happen st some point. But to have it happen in every one of your losses?😧 That’s a pretty bad sign and an indicator of some issues.

Something you see with successful teams is that they bring in a critical mass of tough-minded, team-oriented players who create an overall attitude and locker room culture, then they can afford to bring in a few flakier or riskier players who may have exceptional talent or who fill a certain need. The Patriots are a prime example of this. The overall culture is so rock solid that even a Randy Moss or Aaron Hernandez will toe the line in the locker room. The old championship winning BSU basketball teams were sort of like this also.
Whitford seems to have failed at this. He's brought in a grab bag of characters from too-nice, to beat-girls-heads-on-the-pavement, to can't-stop-smoking-pot, etc. Not saying there aren't any solid, tough characters...but there's not enough. There is no hard core to rely on when the going gets tough. It seems that the overall mental toughness of the team as fallen since Billy Taylor's recruits all passed through - which is really saying something.

Coaches can only do so much when the shooting is as poor as yesterday. I remember many years ago when Keady was coaching the Boilers and they could do nothing right. He called a TO, and later a reportette asked him what he said to the team. He replied he didn't say a thing, told them to "go figure it out". The team still played just as badly.
Do y'all who have played competitive sports have any suggestions for players when they are so "off"?
Once when playing a ladder match in tennis, ladies doubles, my partner, the number 2 team, had challenged the number one team to a match. We had played them many times before, always competitive, never winning. They were a very solid team. Gayle from a popular tennis family in Indy, one of whose members played on the women's circuit, and her partner who I considered the second best doubles player in Indy, behind one of the teaching pros.
We were serving at 0-8. We had made every error you could make. Before I was to serve, I walked to the net to pick up a ball to serve and asked my partner if she had any ideas. Kaye went into a laughing mode and couldn't stop. While she was roaring with laughter, I served. Somehow, someway we won that game. On the change over, I said "well at least we won't get bagelled"and she started the laughing again. Couldn't stop. Kaye got a bit serious when we found ourselves at 5-8. We could see the opponents were rattled and we had righted the ship. Ended up losing in a tiebreaker, 10-9.
So maybe laughter really is the best medicine, even in adversity in sports.

It happens to all teams at some point. It should not be happening regularly like it does to us. (In half our Mac games). THAT is the problem. After a bad effort that I was a part of our coach threw bats out of the dugout, reamed us for our poor effort and focus and called us pussies. When you could still be tough on players. After that we went on a winning streak. Amazing how much better we played after not getting patted on the back for sucking. Our coach challenged us and we responded. He did not say it was just one of those days.

Understand cardfan. But times have changed. Can't offend the snowflakes.
This is where the team needs leadership on the court. If fellow teammates reamed their buddies, it would likely have more meaning. In Keady's world, they would figure it out.
My example with the tennis match is where with no coach, we stumbled on something that worked. At least for one match.
