Ball State was his only D1 offer. How good do YOU think he is. Now answer the question, does red-shirting him make practical sense or not ? If so explain why and cool it with the histrionics. I don’t know how good he is, I don’t think you do either. The kid had better statistics than Mosses in H.S. My initial choice after we lost Hollywood would have been to have him play. Since we didn’t early, I wouldn’t do it now. Your right we know but you can not just use high school statistics either. You have to figure in level of competition and where they played. Trey came from a pretty competitive league in Kentucky. Blake came from obion Tennessee wherehe played in the second smallest division. Trey was a decently recruited, Blake was not.

"Speculating we would recruit 2 or more ready to play big men is contrary to MAC history most places. Big guys rarely play in first year." That doesn't mean you just red-shirt them all. I still have no clue what your point is. Many do RS. We gave Teague a RS year and it seems to have worked fine, what is the big deal about that? Teague was injured and would have missed a significant number of games if not the entire season. Completely different situation.

Teague was injured and would have missed a significant number of games if not the entire season. Completely different situation. He is not a similar player, he had considerably more experience in good competition, had much more basketball skill. But Teague badly needed physical development and might not have played very much, that was not injury it was more because Weber, Sellers, Bo and Franko were not going to allow him much PT, and we had several other to be emergency backup. Huggins needed skill development, benefits greatly from practice with good players. He has a year to work to add some muscle, he is not painfully thin as Teague was and has a build where he can add some bulk and athletic ability that he will still be able to move well. He may be a longer term prospect who needs the RS more, but he is bigger, and at his size the 5 year investment makes sense. This is exactly the kind of case, like Teague where a RS year means a better player in that 5th year, instead of bench time as a freshman not ready to play. With his size and athletic ability it's a good gamble to have a year tied up as it gives us a chance to have a solid backup, and very possibly a starter quality player down the road. No sure thing, but then it is probably a better bet than your pipe dream that we add multiple starter quality players with his size who are ready to play sooner. Look, I don't buy your argument. You worry about using the scholarship better at the same time you think every recruit we sign is a bust before you see them, even sometime after others have and can say they are going to be good.

Nearly every MAC team will have some scholarships tied up for 5 years. As a 4 year player he would likely add little for two years, one year not ready for prime time, maybe on year as a player at the end of the bench playing only a little as back up. Then probably just be ready to play and contribute but only have 2 years to play. After RS, not only do you coach and develop him to be better at his peak, you are much more likely to have 3 good years. Exactly what we have NOT had in backup players in the last few years. For a big man recruit that is a good deal. VERY few step in and contribute much as freshmen. It's not the first year that we should compare but whether in his year 3, 4 and 5 is he better than some freshman big man we recruit. Instead we can consider a RS for that guy. If in fact we have the fairly unlikely good fortune to sign these two very good big men you are worried about getting, who are ready to play right away, there is little down side. We're happy. Gee, we'd have the living hell of seeing 3 good big men on the roster.

That is absolute bullshit. It's almost impossible to have a discussion with you. You either morph the current topic into something different or completely mis-characterize what someone else has said.

Which recruits have you been optimistic and positive about? Whatever the coaches do, recruiting or working with players you are going to criticize them, at least you have in the past on many occasions, nearly every occasion involving a freshman recruit. Moses, Teague, Mallers, Hollywood, Acree, Coleman? Criticism of Indiana All Stars who have contributed, including Weber and Persons. Now Hazen and Walton. Tell me where I am wrong about that? If I am wrong, I'll enjoy the recap of your positive thinking! Please have at it! My point is pretty simple one, and relevant, not some diversion. If our recruiting is as bad you think, then developing a player with a RS year seems to me to make great sense from your point of view. And. Saying the idea is a poor on because you expect us, or maybe ANY team in the MAC, to expect to get multiple ready to play big men who will make it impossible for this to pay off is just not a very likely scenario. I don't like betting on that far more than the small cost associated with a 5th year player after a RS. If players really don't develop at all, they can transfer to a lower level and play, we have lost little.

Most of my posts are in response to your continued hyperbolic positive evaluations of talent. Go re-read the Gunn recruiting thread and you will see exactly what I mean.

If you had a half a brain you would remember I went through this same bullshit with Rusty about a month ago and listed my actual comments on multiple recruits. I am not going to spend my time digging through all those threads again.
