I don’t buy the crap that we have lost our legs. Look at the other conference teams and minutes played by their starters. We played 8 kids tonight who played double digit minutes, same as CMU who pressed most of the game. We had one kid play over 30 minutes. The bottom line is this is not a tough minded group. Losing Walker hurt our depth but it is not costing us games. The 8 kids we put on the floor are more than capable of beating any team maybe not Buffalo, in the MAC and they proved that over the course of 6 games. We just simply did not come to play and that is the bottom line. We came out tentative and CMU got a spark from their press that gave them momentum they never relinquished. We needed to attack the press to score from the start as we were just concerned about getting the ball over the 10 second line. Whitford is an enigma to me as he does a great job with sets out of the timeout but is often too slow making adjustments against the zone. CMU did a great job scouting us as they took away the post entry pass and took away the wings. They were daring us to make the skip pass to the corner which we often tried and turned it over. Never once did I see us go to a double high post which would have taken pressure off of our shooters and would have opened up the baseline. Shit, maybe I need to ask for a job. Pretty fundamental and we did not adjust.

Did Kiapway really get 5 minutes of PT and have no stats at all?

If they lose their last game they’ll be 10-8. If we win ours we’ll be 11-7. That trumps 10-8 right?? They must mean among all other teams emu holds the tiebreaker no matter what. So we’d be 3 and they’d be 4 if we win and they lose. Now if we lose yet again I’m not sure what happens to us. I know we’re tired but surely to goodness this team can regroup and come up with a big effort Friday night. And hopefully the coach can extract the effort necessary out of them to get the job done. If not this season is pretty much over in disappointing fashion and the excuses will fly.I just I just read on twitter that EMU has locked up the #3 spot. This is from the MAC.. If we do not win Friday and Kent or WMU or both win... There will be 3 teams that are 10-8... BUT if we win, we are in for the #4 spot so you have that...

Did Kiapway really get 5 minutes of PT and have no stats at all? He appeared to have his marching orders. Down 25 with under 2 minutes to play and he was passing up open shots to pass the ball. He and Davis are taking/took Whit’s immature crap way better than I would. If Kiapway is guilty of some unknown transgression, let him go. If not, he should be playing.

Kiapway has not been playing because he has not played well all season. I feel bad for him, but the statistics tell why he has not seen the court much the past few games. Francis started eleven games for the Cards, six at the start of the season, and five after the suspension of Walker. His numbers in those games were down significantly from the previous seasons in a Cardinal uniform. ballstatesports.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5809I wish he could have regained some confidence and his shot, but that hasn't happened this year. Go Cards! RF

Reduced minutes absolutely makes sense given his lack of production. But to write him off entirely, especially when we desperately need guard depth? And to not get a kid who gave so much to the program, including playing while hurt, even one minute on senior night? That’s simply petty on the part of Whit. We still could have used him in spot relief during this last stretch if only to get someone like Persons a minute or two of rest.
Whitford was willing to play Tyler despite multiple suspensions and utter disregard for rules and his teammates. We gonna believe Francis did something worse to warrant being sent to the end of the bench?

Pretty fundamental and we did not adjust. I don't buy the tired idea either. we don't have anyone near the top of the conference minutes played stats. Why are we tired and the others are not? They've played just as many games as we have. I'm also not sure about this tough minded notion. We seem to be very tough minded when we want something badly enough. There are some games though where it almost looks like key players are off their ritalin and just don't give a damn. You can see a pattern in the way these games unfold. We play poorly in the first half but keep it close. Careless play. Many turnovers, with a lot of them not being forced by the opponent. Then we get our doors blown off in the second half. Oregon. Buffalo. Miami. The first game against Western. The second game against Eastern. Last night against Central. The Alabama game last year was like that. It doesn't matter the skill level of the opponent. I have a kid with ADHD, and frankly it reminds me of that.

We weren’t shooting the 3 that well when two of them were playing. And remember, the whole damn roster is chock full of versatile players who can shoot. Small ball, right?

We’ve seen it far too often the last 3 years.

Never once did I see us go to a double high post which would have taken pressure off of our shooters and would have opened up the baseline. Shit, maybe I need to ask for a job. Pretty fundamental and we did not adjust. Good points on CMU preparation. And it is clear the press was a big factor, not just in attacking our weakness in ball handling but by pressuring Persons to a great degree. Both factors make me I disagree on a couple of points. As dependent as we are on Persons with the other starter quality guards we have lost, the lost legs and resulting lack of good guard play is a factor. It is Persons' legs that are weary. I think what we proved over 6 games is how great effort can make this team dangerous, but that effort masked our weaknesses. Good coaching to make the most of our strength, but good coaching cannot create strength out of weakness, unfortunately and opponents are now finding and attacking the weakness. Losing Walker was a big turning point in our prospects. I was surprised at the impact a little. He apparently was much more than we realized important glue that held us together when we needed guard play. True, after an adjustment to the big lineup we made up for it with very good effort by Persons but teams are now prepared to pressure Persons and we have no answer. Not enough quickness elsewhere except Teague to push the ball up court, not enough ball handling to sustain long possessions and find the entry passes and open shots. Nobody thinks Persons is a great ball handler and play maker to start with. But, our moving from a passing game to a P&R orientation and having him the the best and often the sole ball handler is hurting badly. AND, losing guards wears him down as he has to defend the quicker guards. Ish when he plays well shows some promise but he is not ready for prime time. Josh can defend, shoot an open shot passably, but is not a play maker. Kiapway could serve at guard when we were playing more of a passing game, but is not adept at the P&R play we now depend on. I expected us to develop and use our inside play better as we got Moses and Teague on track, which when we had depth I thought gave us some chance to do something. Losing guards AND quality depth made me very pessimistic. Even in our 6 game stretch I was concerned. Good guards are necessary to win championships and lack of guard play makes it VERY hard to win.
