I seem to recall them being wildly optimistic about Ball State last year, almost laughably so. Then a little digging revealed that the author or one of the contributors had some sort of direct ties to BSU.
I could also be drunk and be misremembering. I'm at least one of those things.

Yeah, but I like them because they start early, and go through every conference.

Orlando Sentinel has BSU @ #121. Central Michigan @ #117. Others of note -- UMass is in at #120, and Tulsa is in at #111. What a tailspin for Tulsa. Ball State's article

Probably correct and all projections have us in that area. IMO, the offense has the possibility of being pretty good. The D is a real issue. Three wins, yes. More, possible. Should have two OOC wins. Beat Kent at home, maybe Central. After that it will depend upon the O staying healthy and the D showing some life. Wish I could be more optimistic.

They got Rutgers in at #90, ahead of TSIB.

They got Rutgers in at #90, ahead of TSIB. Shows how flawed it is.

How can you be optimistic about one of the worst programs in the history college football (currently only five teams rated worse)? They have been terrible and as far as I can see they will always be terrible. Yea yea yea...I know...they are improving...getting better players...blah blah blah...I hear the same BS with every new coach they hire...Don't fret, they will be hiring another coach in a couple more years...They are lucky that they joined the Western Conference (now the Big Ten) 100 years ago. Without their conference affiliation they would be a run of the mill D-2 team on the gridiron.

Without their conference affiliation they would be a run of the mill D-2 team on the gridiron. Makes no sense to discuss that counterfactual. They were then and still are one of the big powerful well funded Universities. Is there a university their size which doesn't have FBS football? Some high prestige schools have dropped down in football but look at the Big East Schools without FBS football. IU is not similar to Butler or others.
Those early conferences were organized around football and IU belonged. They may have football as a luxury they can afford, but their other sports programs would put them in the B10 or another power conference later if at that point in history they somehow had not joined the B10.
When football took off and started drawing big crowds those conferences became a way to organize the big paydays and simplify scheduling. It was no accident IU was included in the club even in football. Big school, large alumni base, able to build a big stadium, and so on.
They would never have been "D2." Even though they now play at that quality level at times!

Yet they’ve managed to get to bowl games more recently than we have.

Without a Big Ten membership they would be similar to the University of Pennsylvania. Big Ten means big money. Not many state supported schools out of ''major'' conferences that are big time. IU was in the right place at the right time...Bowl games are meaningless in this day and age. Quite frankly, if you are in D-1 and DON'T go bowling your team is terrible. In the Big Ten you only have to win three or four conference games to go bowling. BFD

So our team is terrible. I can’t stand iu either but they’ve taken advantage of their situation. We have not done the same and have no room to rag on any program at this point.

The diff between IU and Ball State is the big ten and the money their alums rape the state budget of and we get peanuts. I do not hate IU I hate the attitude many of their overrated student body takes about EVERYTHING IU. Just for the record I was accepted to IU.
