At 4,022 this was the best attended opener since I started tracking attendance numbers (10-11 season).
Only 4 games from last season were better attended. Good start.

All in all I'm satisfied. Teams with good post play are going to cause us serious problems, but that's not a new revelation. I generally liked our new guys. Yep. I assume we’ll improve a little bit inside once Trey is back up to speed but in general we’re just not strong inside. Hazen is athletic but he’s not strong so he won’t keep bigs off the block either. We are definitely built to get out and run, and we can defend the perimeter better, but if we get bogged down in a half court offense we may not have the shooters to do well there. But when we can attack the rim we’re pretty dang good. Would really be good if trey gives up on attempting fancy moves and dribble drives. Wild flips in the general direction of the back board don’t work for him. Just be solid big fella!

I don't like it very much, but wonder if we will see some zone D later in the year. As it is we can play a more ball oriented man defense with help and will have to do that some.

Wonder if he's trying to keep up with Teague?

We really need to try to deny post entry passes as well. Once a big dude catches the ball deep on us we’re toast. No Gunn cannot guard the post, or even a sign post. Ish is disappointing. Hopefully he’ll find his mojo. Mallers didn’t play well but big games lie ahead for him.

Hopefully he’ll find his mojo. Mallers didn’t play well but big games lie ahead for him. When you are not very big in the middle and playing man defense you have to do a number of things.
1. Agree we have to defend the ball very well, and probably do more to play in the passing lanes inside.
2. Have to fght for position and not let the opposing big guy get rooted down where he wants to be. Push him out a few feet is a big victory, makes it that much closer to help that's coming, upsets his favored inside moves and shot. Don't need to be tall but very hard if you don't have at least a strong big body to play who can halfway manage to play behind the post if the ball gets inside.
Trey can probably do this but has to be more agressive than we have seen, and NOT try to block shots as much as play position, let the help come. Gunn who may be a little quicker is not a wing defender, not a shot blocker, not at all ideal for help and recover, so maybe we have to get him to try to do this. IU once had a team where they played Ted Kitchel this way. Gunn is not as big but he's reasonably strong for his size. Up to now, he is just not reacting when the ball gets inside even when he has prevented the opponent getting perfect position.
3. You have to be very active and react when the ball goes in to the post, both to bother a shot and make passing back out difficult. This takes high energy and very good perimeter help and recover. We have not shown that in the past, may have a little more chance this year with Walton, a quicker Persons and Hazen. Mallers can be a pest but has to get back outside when he needs to.
4. Of course if Trey were better in the post we might attack the opposing post man to get him out of the game with fouls. Maybe we can use drives to the basket to do this in some games.
5. But another major antidote to fighting the big post man is to just make him play harder on defense, make him come out on the court, and run the court. When he is gassed and maybe a little leg weary his play on offense is lower impact. This theoretically is where Teague is a huge plus, a nightmare match for many big strong defenders. But he has to move, cut, drive and challenge the post man, not settle for jacking up shots UNLESS he hits very well, then I'll forgive it... If we can make the big man switch he'll have trouble with our forwards, when we play without Trey. With Trey I think they just don't switch on him.

Like I say, I don't like packed in zones but maybe a swarming zone with some kind of match up config could work with this crew. Ish might be more effective then and he looks like our 3rd guard.

I just saw something that really made me feel good and showed me how hard at least one person on the team is working.. I was driving home and I saw Taylor jogging by himself down Riggin road. I love the fact that its the morning after a game and he is running miles from campus on his own time. I admire the worth ethic..

Weird I did not think 4022 was good for an opener but you have the numbers and I guess it is.. Good stuff hope we build on it.. Anyone there should have been entertained we have been starving for a fun athletic team. This squad appears to be both.

Walton is taking some of his playing time and he is learning to work with a different role. In 13 minutes of play Ish was 2-3 from three point range for 6 points. He had 2 rebounds, 1 foul, and 1 turnover. No assists. Bump that up to 26 minutes and it would be 12 points 4 rebounds and 2 turnovers. He needs more assists, but that is not unproductive.

No one is worried about his offense its his defense he is absolutely lost out there. He has no clue at all

I wouldn't be so quick to equate "best we've had since 10-11 season" with "good". There are a lot of things we could do the best we've done since 10-11 and still not be doing well.

It was election night. I think it is a good start. Well, not killed. You know what I mean.

Is anyone having trouble with ESPN Plus? Started fine, but is worthless now. Even the BSU stats has not worked properly. Fortunately the radio feed works, though it is less than fun to listen to the Cards less than stellar play. Go Cards! RF No problem at all and I am grateful for ESPN + and the very nominal cost of such. It is terrific when I live a 12 hour round trip drive from Murray, Kentucky to campus.
