Well, in his game write up ograra said exactly what several of us have said: “Whitford is not a results oriented coach.....”. Whitford also said “we’re fine” after the game.
He’s happy as long as, in his estimation, “we played the right way.” No need to demand excellence or anything like that. Yeah We played better but it’s still an L and we’re still 1-3 in the Mac and have put ourselves in a crappy position. But we played the right way so there’s that. The boys can feel good about themselves in Whitfordville.

We just have to have more from Mallers (2 FG attempts in 32 minutes), Moses (4 in 35 minutes) and Nehls (0 in 16 minutes). We only had 3 turnovers at the half but finished with 16.

Players looked scared to take shots last night. Passed up a lot of good looks. Reminds me of the Billy Taylor era.

Back on the grid.. I expected to come on here and read some crazy bantering. What do I find a bunch of nothing. We have officially accepted the fact that this is just what a lot said it would be just another ho hum season. Its sad but true I don't feel it is ho hum at all. Win or lose it is always exciting. Sometimes for good reasons, sometimes for upsetting reasons. It is what each person makes of it. To say that nobody cares is self absorbed bullshit. I'm sure many have lost interest. To each his own. It's always more fun to follow a winner. As for me and my family we are as excited and engaged as ever. Hell my daughter who is a student at BSU is losing sleep over our current losing streak. Personally I found out a about ten years ago that allowing it to consume me so much was not healthy. Right now our basketball team is enduring a challenging time. Mentally, physically, emotionally. Many of us have been challenged in our lives with difficult times where it seemed nothing was going right. If you have not someday you probably will. I'm sure glad the people who support me didn't give up on me when I went through such times.

But getting Hazen and ish back will be the magic elixir. That’ll fix everything, right? It will be significant. We need that third/fourth big and ‘ish has proven to be a real asset to the team. It will make a difference. We have probably made the difference versus EMU and BGSU. Ohio?

UJ, that’s all well and good and a very nice lecture, and you are a great fan of Bsu athletics but for gosh sakes this happens every year with Whitford. If it were an unusual occurrence then hell yes people ought to hang tough with it and fight through. But now that it’s evident it’s par for course for Whitfords program you cannot blame people for checking out. If you’re going to be coaching a D1 basketball team and lots of money and time is invested in the program then you have to be about winning. Otherwise why even do it? You can’t just keep spouting “we played the Right way” and “we’re fine” over and over after losses and expect people to keep buying it. As O’gara astutely observed, whit just is not a results oriented coach. I’m sorry but the only result is either an L or a W. Not, we lost but we played the right way so it’s all good. Not at this level. Maybe you’re content with that. But clearly more and more people are becoming not ok with the same ol same ol. Just as with football. Still, here’s hoping we find some magic and roar to the finish rather than whimper. Again.

After the effort we gave against Ohio unfortunately coming out against Bowling Green and giving an appropriate effort needed to be a point of emphasis. Four games into the conference season even with three losses we far form sunk. Each game is its own individual result and losing is not fine. Does it do any good to scream and cry over it? The past is past and there is nothing that can be done about it. All that matters is what happens going forward. The end result goal is to win the MAC Tournament and go to the NCAA Tournament. In that respect we are fine. Losing these three games has not significantly damaged out chances of either. If we want to move forward, get totally back on track, return to winning, and try to build this team into one that can challenge Buffalo it makes no sense to come out and be publicly negative, especially when you have at least one player on the team who is challenged with a dangerous level of depression.

It will be significant. We need that third/fourth big and ‘ish has proven to be a real asset to the team. It will make a difference. We have probably made the difference versus EMU and BGSU. Ohio? But how did we destroy Toledo without them. And they would not have changed to sleep walking vs Ou. C'mon cardfan. That's and easy question. Against Toledo (and in this game until we lose Teague) we had the 3 best players play well enough and stretched their minutes.
With two good players on the bench, not only can you give those players a breather, but can afford to have one not play well, substitute for them for a longer stretch even. Now. If Persons, Teague, KJ don't play well, or can be defended very well and stopped, we have to have Moses and Mallers have very good games. You can blame them if you want, and they can play better but having good bench just makes solving problems easier.
I agree with you and I see no solution to the really bad game, where we get blown out. But with a better bench it is hard to argue we woudn't have improved enough to win 2 of 3 of these losses by producing a single extra bucket or two.

Simplistic but hope it works.
I do take umbrage to the thought that a coach should not give his team tough love because some guys are clinically depressed. Who’s running the show? The player(s). Does being soft help them learn how to deal with the world and be adults? You still have to coach and play and keep going. Tiptoeing does no good in the long run.

....If you’re going to be coaching a D1 basketball team and lots of money and time is invested in the program then you have to be about winning. Otherwise why even do it? You can’t just keep spouting “we played the Right way” and “we’re fine” over and over after losses and expect people to keep buying it. Not at this level. Well said. The argument that in the end we are all about winning and nothing else, which is the familiar refrain, begs the question on two points.
First. We don't have to like it, but sports spending does not have top priority, and the results we are actually getting which bring us out of the cellar may in fact satisfy top administration. This is not on Whitford or the players if true.
Second, however disappointing we have to deal with reality and whatever we might want as fans, this may be a case where negativity about players and coaches does no good. We have to see what we can do with these players this year, go on. Fuming about it publicly by the coach contributes to that how?
Bottom, let's be real, even good teams slump and play poorly at times. All but the very best teams lose more than anyone wants. We are not a "very best" team. Everybody is bummed, still let's not over react either. Whitford's words grate on ears that want only to win and win and win again. But he has a point. Remember, coaching has to be about the next game. The staff does not have the luxury the fan base has of whining and sulking over bad results. Losing hurts to them as much or more as to us. They suck it up and go to work to do better. Give them some credit.
