I give. Let’s just play intramurals and give everyone pats on the back.
On to the next and hope we win, one way or another. (And I was never talking about winning at all costs or anything like that. But I’d certainly like our program have a little toughness rather than an annual free pass when things go south like they always do. This isn’t an anomaly with Whitford.) There’s a reason fans don’t come back.

Players looked scared to take shots last night. Passed up a lot of good looks. Reminds me of the Billy Taylor era. Yeah we are back running the "hot potato" offense.

The coaching staff to look at this and also ask, Why? Grunk’ Was never afraid of taking a three. What is going on? When mediocre mid-major coaches hang around too long, this is what starts to happen - they die a slow, painful death. We saw it with Billy Taylor.

Billy wasn't even looking for shot in his desire to keep game pace slow. Seemed to think he could put the other team to sleep with his offense. Only really succeeded with the fans.

We kept Billy at the end with no serious desire to win, entirely a budget issue paying for mistakes in FB, and of course with Ronnie.

Losing hurts to them as much or more as to us. They suck it up and go to work to do better. Give them some credit. Losing hurts them more than it hurts us. We do not depend on Ball State winning and losing games in order to make our living.

Simplistic but hope it works. I do take umbrage to the thought that a coach should not give his team tough love because some guys are clinically depressed. Who’s running the show? The player(s). Does being soft help them learn how to deal with the world and be adults? You still have to coach and play and keep going. Tiptoeing does no good in the long run. Do you know he doesn't in private? Why does it need to be a public hanging?

Ummmmmmmmmm.............................So Whitford and his staff don't get paid when Ball State loses ? I never had a multi-year guaranteed contract and was routinely witness to good people being let go because business slowed. Sorry but I am not going to sit here concerning myself with Whitford's feelings or emotional state.

Back on the grid.. I expected to come on here and read some crazy bantering. What do I find a bunch of nothing. We have officially accepted the fact that this is just what a lot said it would be just another ho hum season. Its sad but true I don't feel it is ho hum at all. Win or lose it is always exciting. Sometimes for good reasons, sometimes for upsetting reasons. It is what each person makes of it. To say that nobody cares is self absorbed bullshit. I'm sure many have lost interest. To each his own. It's always more fun to follow a winner. As for me and my family we are as excited and engaged as ever. Hell my daughter who is a student at BSU is losing sleep over our current losing streak. Personally I found out a about ten years ago that allowing it to consume me so much was not healthy. Right now our basketball team is enduring a challenging time. Mentally, physically, emotionally. Many of us have been challenged in our lives with difficult times where it seemed nothing was going right. If you have not someday you probably will. I'm sure glad the people who support me didn't give up on me when I went through such times. I appreciate your perspective and loyalty, but I refuse to accept how this university continues to waste the opportunities we've had in basketball. "Right now our basketball team is enduring a challenging time." The problem is, that challenging time is going on 17 years now. It's the result of atrocious stewardship and leadership.

Why does it need to be a public hanging? Now Jim, who said anything about a public hanging? Being authentic about how your team is Truly performing is public hanging? That’s a lot of coaches who are hanging players publicly. At minimum most coaches would say “we’re not where we want to be and we have a lot of work to do to get better” or something vanilla like that. Not” we’re fine.” “We played the right way.” After a loss in which we turned it over far too many times, assisted far too few times, and generally haven’t been displaying solid fundamentals. When the best writer flat says the coach is not results oriented.... and if not results then what are we playing for? Milk and cookies? Good lord none of these kids could have played for Rick, dick, or even Buckley.

I don't disagree and never said it needed to be accepted. I don't accept it. Do you think anyone can change it mid season? Is crying and whining on a message board going to help? Are you educating us on things we don't already know?"Right now our basketball team is enduring a challenging time." The problem is, that challenging time is going on 17 years now. There’s a reason fans don’t come back. I understand all that, it is a universal complaint for any program that is struggling to get to the top and not making it.
Be fair. Nobody is saying anything about pats on the back. Everybody, including the coaching staff values toughness. I see 3 disappointing losses, but not quite the kind of hopeless trend you see. This game was not nearly the same as Ohio. Or EMU. And I am not at all sure we are now or recently seeing any free pass and lack of resolve.
Last year when we lost key players at the end, we did not give up, actually put together a run, but soon enough as was predictable when short handed, hit the wall. In the end did not overcome the loss. It was not lack of toughness.
This game. You can meet all your pregame goals and play up to the level you want. And lose. This loss looked to me like one of those losses. No doubt they could have done something different to make up a one point deficit. But overall, in this thread people are recognizing that this was disappointing but not a loss to get all that bent out of shape about.

Would firing James Whitford today help our current team? Don't see where anyone suggested he should be fired today. I wasn't saying they did. I was asking if they thought it would. Surely there is some productive purpose to all this bitching and moaning.
