Yeah, so. There are 5 OVC teams ranked 279 or lower. EIU shows every early season indication of being a bad team. Please link to who picked them 2nd. Belmont and Murray St. are both way better.
I did not watch the game, but, looking at the box score, I was very surprised to see Smith with two 3's. You probably could have got me to bet that he wouldn't hit two 3's all year. So that was a pleasant surprise. He also pulled in 7 boards. If he can handle the ball at all competently and pass with some effectiveness, then he should continue to start at point. If he doesn't pan out, then we are back to the point-guard-who's-not-a-point-guard situation.
Calhoun also has to start. I would like to have a better frontline player, but we just don't.
The SP says we couldn't keep the Lautier-Ogunleye kid out of the lane. That doesn't surprise me at all. I think we lack quickness in the backcourt and we have no rim protecting presence underneath. I think this will be a chronic problem all year. This is just a normal consequence of an unbalanced roster and recruiting failures. Who is quick on our team by D1 backcourt standards? I remember Davis being repeatedly torched off the dribble last year. Unless that was due to an injury that has now healed, he is a liability in this respect. I saw Tyler just once, but he seemed more smooth than quick.

If a kid keeps getting in the lane, wouldn't you maybe try your 7 footer for a good stretch to see what he could do?

I've been told, by reliable people from within the ath. department, of cases where coaches have read and commented on the board. In each case I heard about, it was assistants, not the head coach. This was during the Buckley and Taylor eras.
I suppose it's a quick and cheap way to sort of take the temperature of the fanbase. Personally, I wouldn't be able to stomach it if I was a coach.

I thought we'd see more of Tyler on quick guards, or Smith. But, our help on the drive was not that good, not all on Davis that we were torched.

Kid, you certainly have a knack of hyperbole. EIU beat us "soundly" last year? We were in that game almost all the way, fading in the last 5 minutes and losing by 7.
Nevertheless, I'm going to predict a win Monday. I truly don't believe we can play worse than we did at Bradley, or that we'll shoot that poorly at home.
And the General is right, if Smith can't shoot from outside, I don't know what he was doing making make 2 of our 3 three-pointers.
I'd stay with Smith at PG. 8 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and just ONE turnover in 27 minutes is not a bad stat line. I'd actually like to see him and Davis share the point. Statistically, between the two of them we got 16 points, 14 rebounds, 4 assists and just one TO. Granted that was in 52 minutes, but still pretty good PG numbers even if you take them down a bit.
I find it a little funny that for years we complained about our little PGs getting eaten alive by bigger MAC guards. Now that we have those bigger guards, they're getting eaten alive by the smaller guards.
Tyler at the 2. Sellers at 3. I love Franko so I have to start him, but if Bo gets in and gets hot, I don't know that I'd take him out. I think Moses is fine at the 5. I hope he might be a little more decisive in his second game, but I also definitely would like to see what Wells might be able to do in an expanded role.
Finally, if any coach is reading this board, God help them. Don't they know we're all certifiable?

One other thought: I wouldn't forget Kiapway, especially if our shooters struggle again. Didn't he ignite us a few times last year, especially in those early MAC games?
Shoot it Francis!

I thought several of our guys were hesitate to shoot the 3 at times...including Tyler, Sellers, and Davis.

We scored 52 playing a BAD Bradley team. We haven't had a basketball team that could score since we had a defensive line that could put a rush on a QB. Can't we find a couple of Indiana kids that can SHOOT? As the old basketball coach Abe Lemons said,''There is only one real play, put the ball in the basket.'' Reevo is right. If you only score 50 points a game, YOU AIN'T GONNA WIN. End of story.

Nope and those who say Persons can are wrong, he hit less than 20% of his 3's at NKU.

Lacking shooters is not one of our roster problems. Sellers, Weber and Tyler are all good distance shooters. I think this is the strength of our roster and we will have to lean on it heavily to overcome the various weaknesses of our roster. We should be taking a minimum of 20 3pt attempts per game. What other offensive strengths do we have?
However, if these guys are looking hesitant to shoot for some reason, that's worrying. I didn't even see the game myself, and it's always a mistake to jump to conclusions after a single game, but it's a VERY worrying thing to hear. I hope Whitford isn't so enamored with some vision of his super smoke-and-mirrors motion offense that he is restricting our best offensive players from what they do best. But it's not like Whitford has earned the benefit of the doubt so that I can dismiss this possibility.
I've been saying all off-season that we can look good at times when our shooters are hitting from distance. And we will look bad when they are not. So we were 3-11 on 3's against Bradley....and how did we look?

I was about to make the same post, nearly every point occurred to me and deserved mention. Davis and Smith each have some different strong points. Both will work. Our big guards will be a plus when we get the big guys doing a better job on help, and especially if Wells can play more.

I am generally in agreement with the general on this one. Our shooters, minus Weber, did not shoot well in Peoria but we are fine in that department. Much better than last year. I think we are OK inside, too, House can score. Bo, Davis and Smith, Moses, even add a little offense when they are wide open. That was the one bit of good news from the game.

Talk about adding qualifiers to a description of offensive prowess. Hey these four DI players can score a little if no one is guarding them.
