Wells isn't doing much for us, that much we know. We all hoped he might a starter quality player, and he isn't. Maybe if we didn't have Moses we would see more of him and he would look better. He did this last year, too, did not play much early. I hope he is more than just 5 fouls, and contributes. On the other hand, he did fill in and help us win yesterday, we may not need more with Moses learning and doing well, and after all, we probably didn't have a body as good on the bench last year.

Sherman can take care of himself. He brings most of upon himself by questioning the intelligence of any optimist and I believe that he actually said that the recruiting has been a "complete failure". Mostly he moans and complains about big man recruiting. I believe he feels he qualified his claim. And, he now seems to have a very high bar for what it takes up front to compete at the top of the MAC. Which might just be wrong, but at least it makes more clear what he thinks counts as "failure" even though that term does seem to be rhetorical excess. But aren't we all guilty of excess on occasion?

Wrong. Theron, in 2001-02, had the highest single season rebounding total of any BSU player not named Ed Butler. He was a stud rebounder and a stud inside player who happened to also have some versatility.
And whether you call Theron or Lonnie a lead big is just sterile semantics. They complimented each other and together made a seriously kick ass front line. Even if Moses progresses much more than your typical young big man and somehow ends up as the all-time MAC career leader in an important statistical category (as Lonnie did), you would still have to pair him with an NBA bound big man to be the equal of Smith/Jones.
As I said before, people have chosen to forget the caliber of frontlines we used to win the MAC with, because it gets in the way of their delusions.

I want a kick ass team. Front line may be one way to do it. I want to include 3 front line players, and even look at all positions, and style of play, but you choose not to. The debate is not about what was the our best front line, or even in whether our championship teams had "good" front lines. You have insisted a MAC contender must have something you call a "good" big man. Now apparently maybe two big men, neither who might qualify. But, now, they can be good since they won a championship, even though neither may like others on the list, one not really "good" and one may or may not really be big. But far worse than that exercise in semantics, you are taking on a tough job to deny there is another way to win. You ignore all the other great teams in college basketball that got it done a different way. You compare apples and oranges even as you list these players and maintain they define an archetype. You created the construct "lead big man" and damned Moses for not being such a player. That is sterile semantics.

Blah blah blah. Why don't you post some more about Theron Smith's rebounding deficiencies? That was one of your most hilarious ever.

Blah blah blah. Why don't you post some more about Theron Smith's rebounding deficiencies? That was one of your most hilarious ever. You really think Smith's statistics made him the same kind of player as Gillis, Payne, Kidd and McCurdy? You think Lonnie was? While you preach about what Moses can't do and Teague will never do, go look at the film again. Smith was a player this coach would have loved to have and would use inside and out, no doubt incurring your disdain for his not recruiting a "lead big man" in the image of those four players who were physical inside players without much skill outside the paint. This coach would very much like a rim protector like Lonnie(dime a dozen they are not) and an active forward with skills like Smith, or Palombizio. Your fluid definition of what you want now includes the kind of players Whitford wants. Smith was a prize recruit. I don't call him a "lead big man" he was an all around basketball player. If Whit recruited a "project" like Lonnie, or a forward who wasn't primarily a post player, like Smith. You would probably then be saying he is a failure recruiting.

No, no, no. That's not what we want.
I mean....it's kind of funny that you're implying I wouldn't be happy with Theron after I explicitely listed him as one of the caliber I wanted. But alot of people here could post something that ridiculous. I want your real comedy gold!
So, please go back to how Theron would not be a sufficient rebounder. You know...the Theron Smith who had THE BEST SINGLE REBOUNDING SEASON OF ANY BSU PLAYER IN 50 FREAKING YEARS. That Theron Smith. Please expand on that theme. Was he....maybe too physically weak? Was he....Too small? Not mentally tough enough? I mean...I don't know, I'm not good at this. I don't have your comedic gifts.

Theron is a great rebounder but not the muscle man Gillis et al were and could not defend in the post against good centers. For example Kidd and McCurdy could. Gillis and Payne could. My point is he is a great recruit, maybe second most talented player we have ever had at BSU. Of course he should be a good player and lead the team to some success. But he isn't the same "lead big man" you define by the rest of your list either. You have to get the highest quality players you can and build a team on their abilities. You then find complimentary players who fulfill needs. Our needs are to have at least one strong post defender, preferably a rim protector and shot blocker. I think good function in these areas are more important than being a great scorer inside and being the focus on offense for our needs right now. And I am afraid your definition of "good" is not quite so crystal clear as you say, and don't think "good" requires as much scoring and strength as Gillis, Payne, Kidd and McCurdy had. Certainly not as much scoring and basketball skill as Smith had. Lonnie would be highly desirable on this team, on most teams in the MAC, but he didn't have the stats the other guys did on your list for their time at BSU. Without a lot of good players and some help scoring inside he would not be. T Smith did everything we wanted him to, until injury. But he played a different game than any of the other 5 you mention. He could not defend the post like the other 5. Focus on the rebound stat all you want where he did get at the boards, but don't ignore the rest of my point about this. You and I both want good play inside, but I don't think we need guys who will set records for BSU to get the job done.

General...we do not always disagree but to say Moses does not project as I as some of the players you mentioned I must take exception too...for example, you really don't think he will bring more than Lonnie Jones by his Senior year? Really.

Well Kid, tell me this: what major statistical category to do expect Moses to become the all-time MAC leader in?
I think you're simply forgetting how good Lonnie really was, or you wouldn't take it as a slight on Moses to say he doesn't project to that level.
Lonnie graduated as the all-time MAC leader in block shots - quite a nice thing for a center to do. Lonnie blocked 301 shots and the next closest BSU player is 131. Also, and this actually surprised me when I looked it up, he is the #8 career rebounder for BSU. Of course, he was not a consistently great offensive player but he had his moments offensively. I remember one MAC tourney he got on a roll and was scoring almost at will....in between having to sit out for his asthma.
Finally, I remember (correct me if I have this wrong) that Lonnie was damn close to making an NBA roster...the Bucks I think.
So, no. I don't foresee Moses reaching that level. You believe what you want.

I think the other thing to keep in mind with Moses or any other player is that Whitford is going to continue to try to upgrade the talent level on team at every position. As well as some think we are set now, the coach is going to go out and at least try to recruit players who are, or will be, better than those currently on the roster. That's what happens all the time.
It's the same thing that happened with Sellers. Whit didn't just say, "Wow, I've got the MAC freshman of the year here. We're good." Hell no, he got a chance to get Weber and he took it. Then he went out and recruited Mallers, who appears to fit into that Sellers/Weber slot.
As good as Moses is or might be, Whit is going to try to recruit players who are better, and I sure hope he's successful, not because I want to see Moses play less, but because I want to see the Cards win more.
Moses could be MAC freshman of the Year this year and still be coming off the bench for 15 minutes a game next year if Whitford has luck on the recruiting trails. Moses' job is to work his butt off to make sure he can't be supplanted that easily.

By the way, I do project Moses to graduate as the MAC career leader in helping old ladies across the street, saying please and thank you, and giving hugs to people having bad days. I think he probably already IS the MAC career leader in being a good example for younger people.
But those aren't the categories I was thinking of.

I do not have a crystal ball and the kid has only played 7 games but what have you seen that would make you think Moses will be anywhere near the player Lonnie was. Maybe I have missed something but when I watch Moses play I don't see much explosiveness and he doesn't appear to be very athletic. What I have seen is he has a little touch and he is big enough to be serviceable. Id be thrilled if he could develop into 10-12 point guy who could get a handful of rebounds and maybe block a shot or two. What am I missing? what have you seen that makes you see thing differently
