But yeah, that seems stupid, if that's how it went down. I'd like to hear the professor's explanation before I decide HOW stupid I deem it. I'd assume even after hearing his side, we would think the professor didn't need to call in the police. Probably not, unless the prof asked him to leave, and he didn't. I heard some of the students in the video say that student wasn't being disruptive, but what kids consider disruptive today isn't the definition I use. Case in point, I had some college age students in a nice restaurant start blasting music from a video they were watching on a cell phone. I turned around and (kinda politely, but obviously annoyed) told them they were being rude, and to please turn the sound off. They seemed A) shocked that someone actually called them on their shit, and B) confused that that was unacceptable. They turned the sound off, and started mumbling to each other, no doubt about the old guy that was being an asshole. Of course, my wife was mortified.

Of course this is being turned into a another race issue BSU is going to have to deal with. I do not think race had anything to do with it. Borna just is and always has been a dick. He was 100% wrong by calling the cops and he should be held accountable for that. I just think he would have done to any kid black or white

Once the race car gets a head of steam it can run out of control.

Once the race car gets a head of steam it can run out of control. Worse than a car driven by Natalie Decker!

Very strict about phones and laptops, which doesn’t make him popular with kids these days.

Core value: Try not to suck ... and if happens that you do suck, try not to be a dick about it.

Core value: Try not to suck ... and if happens that you do suck, try not to be a dick about it. I wish we had the video of the whole interaction to see just how this escalated. You have to think that if the prof had any interpersonal skills, a little self deprecating wit, ability to negotiate, he could defuse the situation. The guy is super serious, super formal in all interactions, handicapped in this by foreign culture, foreign education, and academic culture. Thinks everybody should take him as seriously as he does. A bit of Sheldon Cooper in terms of reading other people.
Probably OK to be an old out of touch fuddy duddy faculty member, students are used to that, or should be. Classrooms are a little formal after all. Don't have to be lovable, should not have to be. Need have some authority, too. But even if you are way out there, the old guy telling kids to get off your lawn, you don't call the cops as the first option. Being out of touch ought to be something you are aware of, you have to try to communicate. That is part of the job description. What bothers me is this appears to be a small class, there really should be less formality.
I am for the same reason a little uncomfortable here with the implication that the student is a hero, a modern MLK standing up to white authority. In fear of his life from the gestapo.
We can't tell from video how this got to the point it did. Maybe both sides need to think about their behavior, maybe a student has some duty to humor the cranky prof. I grant that there may be some justification to say it was a racial slight or appeared that way, but like Rob says above, the prof is very likely unreasonable with everyone. His fault for that, but it is a different problem than racism.

Whether student or prof or both are at fault here, you can't buy this type of publicity.
Do you realize how much the university would have to spend in advertising dollars to get their message out. One good viral video, what a cost saver.

The prof was way out of line. The student is also milking it for all its worth.

I’m pretty certain Borna didn’t call the cops because the kid is black, he called them because the kid upset his classroom management. Knowing what borna is like he woulda done this no matter what the kid looks like. But it’s Too far gone for common sense from anybody, anywhere.
I’m sure the outraged folks won’t be happy until multiple heads have rolled. Over a rigid old professor’s lack of common sense.

This kinda makes me yearn for the good ol' days when the vast majority of my professors couldn't have given a rat's ass whether or not I was even in class, or if I was in class where I was sitting or if I was paying attention to their lecture.
However, I'm sure the outcome of this will lead us to a better place where instructors at all places of higher education that accept state or federal funding will have to submit seating charts noting the gender and ethnicity of the person in each seat to make sure there is no seating bias at work. And, of course, monitors will be in all classes to make sure the instructors do not in some way engage, question or harass students of one gender or ethnicity over another.
Think of the government jobs this is going to create.
