Very few of my profs ever took attendance or paid attention to where people sat. And I don’t ever recall any type of disrespect ever. There was the occasional “you’re being rude by getting your backpacks ready to leave 5 minutes before my class is over” type thing but that was about it. Of course that was pre-social media and constant outrage over everything and everyone is against me/us politics.

www.wishtv.com/news/ball-state-president-slams-cop-calling-professors-unwarranted-overreaction/I'm glad President Mearns called out this professor's blunder and has gotten in front of this. I did find the students comment in this article confusing: “You’ve said inappropriate remarks. You had a good run; a great run! 37 years. That’s longer than I’ve been alive. That’s longer than a lot of my friends from Chicago got to see.”
I am not sure what correlation this debacle has with the death rate of the citizen's of Chicago.

I am not sure what correlation this debacle has with the death rate of the citizen's of Chicago. My wish when things like this are said is that someone, perhaps someone with the word "journalist" attached to their job title, would actually do some fact checking. Perhaps, did this person actually grow up on the "mean streets of Chicago" or possibly some middle class suburb? Has he actually lived to see many of his friends die, particularly in violent ways and possibly during altercations with police, ways that would lead him to be traumatized by the appearance of police in the classroom? Has he personally had contact with law enforcement in ways that would lead him to be fearful of police? This may well be his background, but why not ask a few questions just to clarify things. I also see in his comments that he believes females on campus are at great risk, presumably from sexual harassment/assault? Could somebody please get the statistics on gender-related complaints/assaults on campus, or at least interview some females to get their opinions on how safe the campus is? Ah, but all this stuff takes time and money and resources to find out ... and it just doesn't work into the immediacy of today's news cycle. Plus, it could ruin a story that has garnered a good bit of racial outrage. Who'd want that?

No he is not racist he would have down the same to anyone. Problem is he has to be smart enough to know as soon as he did it to a black kid.. He was in deep shit its just the state of our world. He was wrong in his handling of the situation black or white doesnt matter. He is now a racist Meme and caused it himself. BSU now looks like a racist school again. Im sure there is more to the backstory but you just cant react that way. You asked the kid to move he did not.. Swallow your pride and anger and if its still eating go to the dean and have him bring the kid in.

Talk about getting blown way out of proportion. Only because the kid is black. If he’d done it to a white kid no one would give a shit.

Looks like the classic making a mountain out of a mole hill. When I was in school it would have been handled by a Department Head and that would have ended it...BUT...in today's world EVERYTHING is a Federal case. We are talking about a seat in a class. Move on!

From what I hear, the student is a bit of a problem child.

From what I hear, the student is a bit of a problem child. If thats the case BSU needs to take a stand and bring it all out.. Prof would still be wrong but at least get both sides out
